Re: Mercury DFI Oil, or Mercury Premium
I called Mercury about this very question. They told me that you can use the Quicksilver Premium Plus (which is what my dealer sold me with my new Optimax) but you should use the higher grade gas (Unleaded Plus). If you use the DFI oil they said you could run the regular unleaded gas. Thats what they told me.................

Go AHEAD and run fuel that needs MORE COMPRESSION to burn.........but before you do, go to bass boat central, and read all the posts about blowing motors UP by using mid or high grade fuel.
These motors are very SPECIFIC, with REALLY TIGHT Tollerances. Those are needed for the 06 California emissions rules.......
The higher octane fuel burns slower, hotter (in some instances), and can take as much as 15% more compression to burn effectively.....
BURN 87 Octane Gas, and use DFI Oil.............nuff said.

What about a Pro XS ?
i recently decided to start usinf dfi but not sure its best thing to do ...
3 dealerships told me three differant things and mercury never emailed me back yet .... although the manual says "mercury premium plus"
it just seems the dfi should be better
wish someone knew for sure heh :)

Dave Stewart noted above that if you have a XS, it recommends Premium.
Re: Mercury DFI Oil, or Mercury Premium
My bro is a mechanic and while he wasn't speaking specifically about marine oil, he told me that anything above a certain dollar mark, besides viscosity and additives, was a waste of money and that oil is oil. What do you fellas think of that?
Re: Mercury DFI Oil, or Mercury Premium
I would stay with what the owners manual states. I have a 250XS and talked to a tech at Mercury he told me all of the testing and development on their motors (thousands of of hours) was done with the oil specified. How much oil do you use a month, 2 gallons? How much are you saving 20 bucks. I'm sticking with what the MFG. recommends.
