Re: I guess Guantanamo isn't so bad after all.
We are plenty awake, thank you. Note that a whole lot of dems sided with the repubs on this one. One of the biggest things I saw in the news report yesterday was that no one wanted any terrorists from Gitmo here in a states. They also wanted to see a full plan for what was to be done with all of the detanees before they would authorize any funding. I don't have a problem with that.
I think everyone is in agreement that MOST of the detanees that are being held there are there for good reasons and should never see the light of day again. My problem is with the few folks who are there who should never have been there in the first place. You ready to toss inocent people aside?
Andrew
Interesting point Andrew, don't like the idea of innocent people being tossed aside, though I seriously doubt anyone in there is totally innocent.
Let me turn it back. You ready to risk thousands of innocent lives for the sake of the very few who may possibly be innocent?
Soon as those people go into our regular system, it's certain they'll be released on our streets in short order. Are your ideals strong enough to have a former Gitmo detainee as a neighbor? You answer yes to that one, and you're a better person than me. I don't want any of them on continental United States soil.

I have no problem with any of that. Been my stance all along. Don't want those folks here, in jail or out. Tribunals or other court system has been needed for a while to sort them out.

Re: I guess Guantanamo isn't so bad after all.
I'm sure that when the terrorists heard that Gitmo was being closed, they all threw down there guns and stopped recruiting to fight the evil Satan. When they heard that we would no longer try to get them to talk when captured, they again said we were great guys and want to become our friends. You've got to be kidding me. These guys hate us not because of what we do, but because of what we believe and stand for. If we put these guys in our prisons, do you think they will not have any impact on those already in prison? I've seen shows on gangs in prison that order hits on guys in other pirsons. They also run their empires on the outside very well thank you. Do you think it is better to be blown up by foreign terrorists, or home grown? It also puts their sites on our soil. Instead of them being at Gitmo in Cuba, now they will be on our soil. It's easier for them to focus now. What if these guys get good lawyers that will have evidence thrown out for some odd reason. What if there isn't any evidence at all because our boys were too busy dodging bullets at the time. Will the lib judge have empathy for the poor guy and let him go immediatley? He will have our rights accorded by the constitution wont he? What about maranda rights? No I would rather have our boys concentrating on doing their jobs rather than worrying about what some lib judge thinks about the evidence gathering.
What about the 1 in 7 that have been released only to go right back to fighting us and probably killing our boys on the field. What does the President say to the families of the fallen? Will he be able to convince the families that it is more important to look good to the world than to protect us from these terrorists? I can only imagine turning loose Germans or Japanese during the big war. Of course we dont want to hurt anyones feelings. We need to run a PC war. Yeah right. Here's what I would like to see our leaders say to the world in the time of war. If you are on our side, we will be on yours. If you are against us, we will be against you with all we have. If that hurts your feelings, get over it. It's better to be on our good side than be against us. Sounds arrogant doesn't it. No it's fact. Dont fight against us. I think the evil W said something similar. One last thing. If you terrorists don't want to have to worry about going to Gitmo and being served grilled chicken with rice, then dont fight against us. Easy as that. AS soon as we no longer have a need for Gitmo, I'm sure it will go away. Castro brothers need a place to re-educate their own people.
Re: I guess Guantanamo isn't so bad after all.
As a medically retired disabled vet, from this conflict, I would like to weigh-in on this just one time for the Soldiers.
What did the the people who are wanting to let these freaks go, or close Gitmo down for being to "harsh" think when they witnessed the public (on tape even) BEHEADING of a US CIVILIAN????? I am not even going to go into the junk that happens over in Iraq and Afghanistan that you all don't EVER hear about, but we have to see and live with on top of that one act. I mean why are WE REQUIRED to promote the Geneva Convention standards when I have NEVER seen them used, or upheld, by the enemy we are fighting in those regions? Has it paid us any "formidable" dividends, when it comes to how OUR SOLDIERS are treated by them, when we rake our own over the coals for things in public? NO. This enemy is like none we have faced in our lifetime and there needs to be a NEW set of rules of engagement for it. Look at the information those men were able to get after putting that "detainee" on the waterboard that he refused to give up prior to getting on it. He told EVERYTHING he knew and it quite frankly helped save AMERICAN LIVES!!
Listen, I am not a hater, I am just sick of "being the better man" at war and trying to fight unresonable enemy with reason. This all makes no sense. I do not think they should close gitmo, but rather EXPAND it and its uses. Until you sit there and watch your friends chest suddenly open up and realize there is nothing you can do to stop the sucking chest wound he just received, I don't think you have the true perspective on what these idiots are REALLY doing to our Soldiers over there EVERY DAY! I mean no disrepect to the ones on here who have never dawned the uniform, but if you had your perspective SHOULD be different and less empathetic to these CRIMINALS!
Ok, enough of my rant and I appreciate the goodhearted banter on here over this subject. I just wanted to present a view from what you would get from 99% of the Soldiers fighting today if you asked any of them about this subject. Thanks for reading and sorry for the one-sided view on this, but it is what I believe and I guess I am entitled to my opinion like everyone else on here.

Re: I guess Guantanamo isn't so bad after all.
Rob your post was spot on and well recieved by me and mine my friend. You just decribed exactly how I feel about the subject. I never served but my family is full of men who did. Father was a WWII vet so was my Uncle. Three cousins are lifers, one was a Vietnam vet and retired from the Corp after 21 years. The prisoners of Gitmo are scums of the earth terrorist dogs, I have ZERO empathy for these scum. After 9/11 I realized just what we are up against some still have the blinders on and can't see the forest for the trees. The American people don't need to know what happens to obtain intell, just do what you have to do to keep our people safe and so be it. The media needs to back off and shut their stupid piehole and quick fueling the fire of these bleeding heart types. It is not helping our cause or our hard working service men and women in the field. Let them do their dang jobs and shut the hell up, this is how I feel!

Re: I guess Guantanamo isn't so bad after all.
As far as torture providing good info, an FBI interigator testified before congress that he thought it hurt them in obtaining info from Gitmo prisoners: http://www.google.com/hostednews/ap/article/ALeqM5g8SP2D0uKiFrSELRXbEMrv0JE0iAD985HPQO0
No, I do not like seeing Americans (or other for that matter) being ill treated by terrorists. However, if we are claiming to be above them, why would we want to stoop to their levels.
As I have said before, we need some kind of trail to sort out the folks at Gitmo into those who are in need of a bullet and the FEW who should not have been there in the first place.

Re: I guess Guantanamo isn't so bad after all.
Rob, thank you for your service. My uncle was captured by the Germans during WWII. He weighed 50 lb when released. I bet he would have taken a good water boading instead of starving. He wasn't seved grilled chicken with rice, or given a bible to read either. He had to eat rats that they caught.
It seems the perception is that we torture all the detainee's we capture when in fact we waterboarded three individuals. It is not our way to do torture on our enemies. We did it to three guys that we thought had info that could save thousands of american lives. I want my President to do everything necessary to keep those that put him in office safe. It's his job. We aren't a brutal country. We treat our prisoners right. Sure we have had some bad apples like in Abu Graihb, but for the most part we are the poeple that BHO says we aren't and need to be. I guess we need to stop water boarding our brave military personel also. It's torture right?
I was watching Fox news the other day and they did a comparison of what W said in several speeches and what BHO said in recent speeches. It seems that BHO has used lines from W's speeches nearly word for word. I guess there isn't much difference between the Evil W and the Annointed BHO after all. Interesting.
Re: I guess Guantanamo isn't so bad after all.
Here is some more observations from an ol soldier:
1. No soldier in his right mind WANTS to go into combat.
2. No soldier in his right mind WANTS to go into combat without his leaders doing everything possible to ensure his/her safety as much as possible.
3. No soldier WANTS to go into combat and risk their lives so that some few folks can become rich off his/her blood and the blood of their brother and sister soldiers by feeding off the military industrial complex.
4. No soldier WANTS to complete a mission to crush the enemy only to hang around with their hands tied behind their backs just so the locals that don't want them there can pick them off at their leisure.
5. ALL SOLDIERS that go into combat want to crush the enemy, kill anyone that they think is an enemy, and come home when the battle is over without worrying about whether or not they are going to be prosecuted for doing their job in the heat of battle.
6. ALL SOLDIERS that are in the middle of a battle don't give a crap about high ideals and what other people think about their actions...they just want to survive to live another day.
FACT: This country has not fought a war since WWII with the effort to win. Our political leaders that have gotten us into these ensuing wars are bought and paid for by special interest groups. Speical interest groups do not give a **** about soldiers or the future of your country. It is EASY to use the visibility of your high office wave a flag around and preach patriotism so that you can fire up the masses for your own greedy reasons...it is another thing to do what is necessary to ensure that flag does not touch the ground.
FACT: If this country is to survive and our way of life is to survive, you better get your head out of the sand and stand up to be counted as an AMERICAN...not a **** Republican, Democrat, African American Republican, African American Democrat, Latino American Republican, Latino American Democrat....etc, etc, etc.
You want to feel safe? How many freedoms are you willing to give up to feel safe? Or would you rather wake up and realize that you are probably never going to be totally safe again and do what ever is necessary to ensure you will be free and minimize the risks of being free by sending a message to the folks that want to take your freedoms and kill your families that if they mess with you they will pay the price....example: If we had pulled out of Iraq after we bombed them back into the stone age and ran over their armies, they would be spending the next 500 years killing one another over food and water instead of planning their next attack on us while killing our occupying forces and making a lot of rich folks richer.
