I have caught Gizzard Shad as big as 15 1/2 inches long and surely that was not as big as they get. I do know that when they get that size it will take a pretty big fish to eat them. Saw a study somewhere that said a Bass can eat a fish like a Shad up to 1/2 it's body length and a fish shaped like a Bluegill up to 1/3 its body length. Take a pretty big fish to eat a 15-20 inch shad and I bet a shad this size is eating it's own kind to get that big.
DRUM, Made you Look, 45lb sack of Drum with almost 2 limits and 2 lost fish on Sunday. Another 22lb Drum caught on Saturday with a couple more small one's. Anyone wanting to know the pattern on the Drum bite just PM me and I will tell you. Never mind, with the way fishing was the past few days, if you are like me, you did not mind the Drum bite because the Greenfish and Brownfish were not biting in my boat. Drum pattern is Silver and Black Red Eye Shads in 12 foot of water off the secondary points back in the bays. Landed 4 Drum in 4 cast at one time, 9 within an hour or so and lost another couple. First time in my life that I PATTERNED the Drum bite. For Bass fishing, had 8 keepers in 3 days, some small fish, several White's, Drum, and Shad caught (yes Shad caught including the monster 12 incher that hit Sunday morning). Shad in the backs of the pockets but not many Bass were in the mix. Worst trip I ever had to the Twins but what do you expect with the water temps dropping 7-10 degrees in the last week. Mornings had FROST up to 1/4 inch on the boat and mid 30's for temps, highs never hit 60 since Friday, Monster Cold Front. If you caught them then you are better than me and I tried everything in my box from Cranks, Traps, Spinnerbaits, T Rig, C Rig, jigs, swimbaits, Scrounger, Buzzbait, Zara Spooks, Pop R's you name it, if I had it, I tried it. Got skunked this morning for my first day ever of not catching a Bass on Ky and Barkley. Had one straighten the hook out on my jig and another hit my C Rig but I never got a hook in her. My buddy, 3sons, landed a Monster 8 incher that had him beat me in the Bass Catching numbers category for the weekend trip by 1. He also had the biggest fish of the weekend, 22lb Drum, but I think I got him on total fish caught if you include the Drum, Shad and White Bass. Since I need these to count in the total, I will use my Wife's scoring system, which says if it has 2 eyes and a set of gills then it counts as 1. I need all the help I can get on this trip. Tough fishing at the twins this weekend. Never patterned anything but the Drum and if not for the excellent spring that I had down there would be wondering if there were any Greenfish or Brownfish swimming in the water. Caught fish from Main Lake ledges, to ledges and humps in the Bays, shallow-med-deep in the bays. All little fish except for the 8 or so keepers with biggest of the weekend being 3 1/2 pounds. Good Luck fishing thru cold fronts like this one that just past. Elnut
Elwood it's a small world seeing you in sugar, good to put a face with the name. Wow what a crazy trip! I've got pics of the shad schools, it looks like a piece of carpet 50 by 50 in the bays, i never would have believed it if someone were to tell me what it was going to be like with those huge schools of bait fish. I'll post the pics when i figure out how to do it?? Sat i caught 25 LMB in ky lake marina coves, they were eating it up traps/spoons and spinnerbaits. Had a ball 3 keepers, still lots of fun. Sat and Sun caught 12863 threadfin and gizzard shad! 2 at a time on treble hooks. Had 3 LMB in 2 days, have never struck out like that, i figured they didn't want my lure with the buffet of shad everywhere. But man were the drum and yellows on.. I guess everybody experienced the same thing? I hit sugar, duncan, smith, bloodriver, byrd and ginger. Same story everywhere i went. I figured if Dave was searching for bays on sunday, the bite had to be struggling. I wasn't sure if their is anything i could have done different or a pattern to turn to when these shad are everywhere?? Anyway still lots of fun, i'll be back for the spring bite now!

You teach me about the River and I will teach you about the FNF and Dale. Live so close to the Ky River and with basically only working 6 months in going on 3 years now, the money is running out and I need to fish closer to home. Planning on fishing the fly on the river this winter but would like to get into some hybrids or sauger on the river. Mark is a pretty good guy and if he is trying to get you to the Big C, then you may want to take him up on the offer.
