Studs are screws that fit into the felt sole of the wading boot. Some boots have pre-cut holes and come with studs that you can insert and remove depending on conditions. I have felt sole wading boots with the studs inserted. This gives grip on mossy, slippery substrates, while the studs provide a cleat-like grip.
