Re: Best Trolling Motor?
I have a MG 82# / 24V And it will pull my 18' around in the current at the Dam when they are running 1-2 generators !
Caution !!! If the direction is to the side and at full power! It will Darn near throw you out of the seat! For longevity, Not sure, Just had it now about 4 Mos. Cable steer is hard to push the pedal after hours of trolling!!! It has bounced off the bottom a few times that would make you cringe !!! So it is pretty tough IMO

Re: Best Trolling Motor?
Rich, I guess it's what you get used to and become comfortable with. I've had several Motor Guides and loved them. I had no problems with them at all. I now have a Minn Kota maxxum 80 and I can tell that it's a quality motor. I just can't seem to get completely comfortable with it. I've had it for over a year and use it often. Not like Dave but several times a month.
Anyway, I think they're both good motors and don't think you can go wrong with either.

Re: Best Trolling Motor?
Rich,
I have a 82LB 24 V digital MG on my 19 footer and it will trow you off the boat. I have fished at Herrington during the day for 10 hours with all the idiots throwing three foot wakes my way all day and I have not come close to running my batteries down. I was in your position as well last winter and decided to go with MG over MK and I am glad I did. I done alot of research and everyone said that the MK was quieter than the MG but my MG is super quiet and takes a beating thru the weeds and rocks.

Re: Best Trolling Motor?
One word (two words?) AUTOPILOT, AUTO PILOT!!! I have the MK Terrova with AP. (poweer drives also have AP) the Terrova is much easier to deploy and stow than the power drives, although the difference is not that big of a deal. The big deal is the autopilot. the AP setting will take care of minor steering adjustments so you can fish, tie a knot, grab a soda or bait a hook. Not to say they will steer themselves (although some do with the newest gadget the ipilot, a GPS interface that you can program a track into) but they will keep you on a straight line for 100s of feet if not yards without having to make those minor adjustments. I have had both the standard and the AP models and would not consider a model without AP. Both the Power Drives and the Terrova can be upgraded to the new Minnkota Ipilot GPS interface ($399.00 for the Ipilot system). So you do know Santa comes around again next year.
Better shop Ebay, lot of new in the box motors on ebay. (use common sense and paypal for protection). I got my 55 lb terrova on ebay, has
AP & US2. Priced at $1050.00 in Bass Pro, Cabellas, Sportsman guide. Got it new in the box on Ebay $650.00. Have seen many MK Power Drives new in the box on Ebay at real bargin basement prices (40% off list). You have to be a little patient and really follow the listings daily till a bargin comes up (not all listings on ebay are bargins).
Hot deals on e-bay are usually just that " HOT" DEALS !!!!!!!

Re: Best Trolling Motor?
Rich, chart shown in link below for lbs thrust to boats length. If that'll help a bit.

Dayum no wonder my 56 lbs 24 v on 17.5 footer had a hard time going thru 2 foot of wave! Time for me to upgrade at least 74 lbs! Btw mine is 9 yrs old MG Brute and still going strong.
Good price for a 67 lbs with good reviews.

Re: Best Trolling Motor?
I've had both and have not had problems from either one. I will tell you this, if you fish lake with a lot of grass then get the MK. It cuts throught the grass better and doesn't get tangled in the prop NOWHERE as bad as the MG.

Re: Best Trolling Motor?
Rich,
I have the Minn Kota Riptide with Auto Pilot that you fished with me earlier with. It has been great for me, some mentioned about not quick enough in waves but you can get a foot controller for it. I bought foot controller and have only used it 3 times, once you are used to the remote you don't need it I would save your money on that. I take mine in the ocean and 7-8 foot waves and still never broke out the foot controller so in my opinion it's not needed.
If you can squeze the budget or find a good deal on Minn Kota Auto pilot you will be happy for sure. The AP makes life a lot easier.

Re: Best Trolling Motor?
I bought a MK Terrova 36v 101# w/ auto pilot. I fish a 23' centerconsole. The aspect of this motor that has REALLY caught me off guard was how long the batteries will last with this motor. We fish from dark to dark on cumberland for striper. Been pulling planers all day for the last 2 months and have yet to see the batteries below 1/2 charge. I was flat out amazed.

You are hilarious my friend....don't even recommend me that high-end stuff, you saw my boat! lol! Your trolling motor cost more than my boat did! :D That's like parking an escalade in front of a mobile home! I am looking in to getting a MK with AP, just trying to find one I can afford. Thanks for the input though, I will always take advice from the striper king.

I know that OMC sold out to MK but their orginal trolling motors they made were my favorite. I still have 3 complete units and two I use as parts backup. They are just so light and easy to use. If anybody wants to get rid of any please leave reply will buy complete or for parts. Only interested in 12/24 or 24 volt models. Thank You.
