This is how you figure out how ANY VERTICAL wager cost you:
Lets say you want a 8 horse Exacta Box, which means you pick 8 horses and 2 of them must finish first or second for you to win. You have 8 horses in for first and if one of them win then you have 7 horses in for second, because you don't count the one that finished first. 8 times 7 equals 56. You then take 56 and multiply it by the amount of wager you want to make. 56 times a $1 exacta box is $56, times $2 would be $112.
8 for first
7 for second
8x7 = 56 possible betting combinations for you to win
56 x bet amount = what it cost you
Lets say you want to bet an 8 horse TRIFECTA box, which means, you pick 8 horses and one of these 8 must win, one of these 8 must run second and one of these 8 must run third for you to win.
8 horses in for first
7 horses in for second (because you don't count the one that won)
6 horses in for third (because you don't count the first and second place horses)
8 x 7 x 6 = 336 possible betting combinations times your bet amount = wager
336 x $1 = $336
336 x .10 = $33.60 (if it was not the Derby or the Oaks)
Lets say you want to bet an 8 horse SUPERFECTA Box, you need one of the 8 to win, one of the 8 to run second, one of the 8 to run third and one of the 8 to run fourth in order to win.
8 in for first
7 in for second
6 in for third
5 in for forth
8 x 7 x 6 x 5 = 1680 possible betting combinations
1680 times your bet amount is wager amount
1680 x $1 = $1680 for a $1 Superfecta Box on 8 horses
The following are what it would cost you for $1 wagers if you chose:
Exacta Boxes:
3 horse = $6
4 horse = $12
5 = $20
6 = $30
7 = $42
8 = $56
9 = $72
10 = $90
Trifecta Boxes:
3 horse = $6
4 horse = $24
5 = $60
6 = $120
7 = $210
8 = $336
Superfecta Box:
4 horses = $24
5 = $120
6 = $360
7 = $840
You have to remember the above are BOX wagers. You can still figure out your wagers the same way. For instance Grumpys wager:

You have 2 horses that can finish first, which leaves 2 to finish second (don't count the first place horse since you have him in for second as well), which leaves 2 horses to finish 3rd (dont count the first and second place horses), and 2 to finish 4th (don't count the first 3 finishers)

2 for third
2 for forth
2 x 2 x 2 x 2 = 16 possible combinations for you to win
16 x bet amount = wager amount
16 x $1 = $16
You can do whatever you want:
Lets say you want 3 horses in for first 8 horses in for second (which include the 3 in for first) and all 20 in for third in a trifecta box.
It would look like this:
3 to finish first
7 to finish second
18 to finish third
3 x 7 x 18 = 378 possible betting combinations
378 times $1 = $378 bet
By the way here is how you figure out ANY HORIZONTAL wager cost, which is very similar:
Pick 3
You like 5 horses in all 3 legs to finish first
5 x 5 x 5 = 125 possible betting combinations
125 times your wager equals your bet
You like 3 horses in the first leg, 9 horses in the second leg, 6 horses in the third leg
3 x 9 x 6 = 162 possible betting combinations
162 times you wager equals your bet
For Pick 4's and Pick 6's you just keep multiplying out the number of horses in each additional leg.

I did play the Derby and spent $72 dollars total.
I played a $1 exacta box, 3 , 4 , 13 , 14
I played a $1 trifecta box 3 , 4 , 13 , 14
I played a $1 superfecta box 3 , 4 , 13 , 14
The exaxta play alone gets my investment back and if I do hit that then have 2 shots to finish 3rd. If I do hit the exacta and trifecta both then I am looking at between $800 and $2000 return. I only have 4 horses in the superfecta and all 4 must finish in the top 4 and if this happens then my return goes up into the $6000 to $8000 range I believe.
