I was pretty young and dad handed em to me.. i was still a little scared of holdin fish so sas soon as they moved i freaked and dropped...that was at Kentucky Lake... probably 15 years ago or more...
I turned a 24" Smallie loose that I caught on Cumberland & my buddy begging me not to do it. Was without a doubt the biggest Smallie I'd ever saw. After seeing a 6Lber.in a BFL I truly realized how big she was. The 6Lber literally looked very small compared to her She was so fat it was unreal. A warden later told me that he was pretty sure I had turned a state record back. If you call that a mistake that would be my #1. I'd still do it just the same. Now if I could remember the girth of her I would get a replica mount done as I've never mounted a fish & more than likely never will.

I don't know what year this was but the state record Smallie for Kentucky is also the World Record Smallie, 11 lbs 15 oz. This fish was 27 inches long and had a girth of 21 2/3 inches. The current world and state record was dis-allowed from 1996 to 2005 and I "think" the state record was then around 9lbs or so until the fish was re-instated. It would take a MONSTER 24 inch fish to be bigger than even 8 lbs much less 9. I think you are safe in that you did not turn loose the record, especially before and after the current record was in place.
they were a flathead theres a pic in my profile of this rivermonster next was a longnose gar sorry have no pic of it.
Winter of 03 December Christmas week. Only know what the warden told me. I do know she was obesely fat. I've got a bunch of 4& 5Lbers under my belt& a few 6 pounders too. I too know what a huge Smallmouth is & figured you may chime in on this subject. One thing for sure I'd say it was my Smallie of a lifetime, but I certainly hope not

Don't worry, I filletted 3 about that size last Thursday to make up for him dropping his:p
My co-angler managed to flat whoop my butt at Barren this weekend. He needed a fifth fish, so I decided to stay put, they were there, but had changed the way they were biting. He set the hook on a 4+ lbs fish, I scrambeled for the net and waited patiently as he brought this fish up. She came up directly in front of the net, about 2 feet out of reach, and jumped. His natural instint was to try and "Pull" the fish into the net while she was airborn. That 5/8 D& L Jig came out and came out in a very big hurry. Hit me directly under the chin and just about knocked me out of the boat. Sad part is, after he gave himself a good cursing for doing that, he realized he had embedded that jig very very deep into my chin. That is probably the most painfull 6 hours of fishing I have done in a while, lol. Cut the hook with a set of cutters, and let him fish. All I can say is when the doctor says "Nurse, go get me the pair of Lineman's Pliers out of the drawer, you know your in for it, lol.
My girlfriend once caught a state record white catfish (about 3 lb.) that we ate for dinner. I know for sure it was the state record fish, because we later saw what is now the state record fish caught on KY Afield, and hers was definitely bigger. That guy didn't know what he had, either, until Tim Farmer told him. On the bright side, that was one great fish dinner we had that night! White cats are great eating.
