Re: Asian carp on Barkley
The could make for fun shooting sport. With a shotgun with little choke so its not dangerous to others at a distance you could have a ball. It might replace skeet shooting as the popular sport.
Or if you want an even better workout how about batting practice.
Re: Asian carp on Barkley
Asian Carp covers two species.
The Silver - the ones that jump and go up to around 30 lbs
The Bighead - the monsters that go a whole lot bigger, but don't jump
The Silvers are the bad ones. There is a push to try and create a commercial market for them - problem is that there is no easy way to clean them due to the amount of bones in them. "Silverfin" is to be the menu name for them. Bowfishing has grown in popularity over the years and helping with some killings, but no where near enough to have any real impact. Some guys are good at shooting them in the air!
They are bad, but they're here to stay. Just like anything else, we'll have to learn how to adjust. I hope that nature itself will find some way to help keep them in check, whether it be some sort of parasite or something of that nature. Seems like every few years it's always something new...zebra mussells, snakehead, and now silvers.
Re: Asian carp on Barkley
Search "Reelfoot Pirates" on youtube. There is a vid of them on the Miss. with a guy tubing behind and he gets hit a few times.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4MJQ2bPWgc0 This is how it was on the Illinois River when I still lived near Chicago.....Video has some bad language so be careful...Looks like we're gonna need a helmet law!!! There is a guy who commercial fishes about 30,000 pounds a week or something crazy like that. Uses a small barge like boat....neighbors gotta love him!
Re: Asian carp on Barkley
Linking out to this article and then to some on youtube really got my attention. I saw some videos on youtube talking about the Illinois river and trying to keep them out of the great lakes and they said these thing have absolutely taken over the Illinois river. 95% of the fish bio-mass in that river is now asian carp representing 8 out of 10 fish. They showed one video piece where one of the DFW boats was shocking them and literally hundreds of them were jumping at once around the boat! It looked like it was raining carp. Stretching that to our beloved big lakes they say what the threat is that these things can take out the bottom of the food chain. They are plankton eaters and can eat more than half their weight a day which takes that resource from other fish in the food chain. Shad and fish fry come to mind which also feed on plankton. If these things go crazy in numbers they could really crowd out other fish not to mention making boating a real adventure as I learned first hand over the weekend. Scary stuff! I say put a bounty on their heads and kill all we can!! Shame that shotgun idea wouldn't work!

Nope. Takes too long to fillet one, and takes quite a few fish to make a meal.
Doe's anyone know why they jump like they do?
vibrations in the water cause the erratic jumping. you should see what happens when you shock the water.
Re: Asian carp on Barkley
Watched a video on you-tube the other day of an Asian Carp rally on the Illinios River. Help anually the get rid of thousands of them every year. Looks like fun as well. Go to You-Tube and search Redneck Asian Carp Rally Illinois River.

I used to live 5 minutes from where they hold it. The towns motto is "we don't have a town drunk, we just take turns" it's actually a fun event that raises money for charity. I saw some pics from this year and they had the backs of pickups filled with dead asian carp....thats a stink you can't get out.
