Burping a striped bass (or black bass) is impossible.
I'm not sure about the Striped Bass but "black bass" are not impossible. I have done this successfully and seen it done for years with smallmouth and largemouth (both black bass). They can be burped and many studies and videos online to show how to do it properly. Now, as far as striper mortality, I agree that this doesn't seem to be the problem. Now grant it, I don't have a degree in fisheries biology and I'm sure that some "burped" fish do die but some of those fish that were "burped" wouldn't have lived had their air bladder not been relieved.

Doesn't the Louisville striper club still fish small tournaments in the cooler months- we fished a tournament with them years ago down on old hickory.

I think you are talking about fizzing. Burping is something that can be performed on fish like lake trout. I've never fizzed a bass so I can't say how well it works. I can promise that the added handing, stress, and wound on a striper will doom it. The odds of a striper surviving decreases greatly if you bring it out of the water.

You are right. I just didn't know that there was a difference between the two...:) I agree with you on the stripers. If I'm gonna handle them long they are going in the livewell as part of my creel.
