Re: Anyone else ever fell in, in the winter?
Not winter, but fell in, on an early cool May morning, fished the rest of the tournament soaking wet... Won the tournament and was glad to get some dry clothes. The air temp was 60's, with a North wind blowing, felt like 40's. I could only imagine how cold it was out there in Feb. BRRRRRR!!
Re: Anyone else ever fell in, in the winter?
Cumberland 10 yrs ago fell off the front while climbling over troll motor to get out after trailering.
Deep enough to go under in 50 degree water. Bruised my ribs lost my hat and ripped my jeans.
We call these things live and learn.

Re: Anyone else ever fell in, in the winter?
I had a friend that went toward the back of my old bass boat chasing a rod holder that popped out and he kept right on going.. LOL It was March so it wasn's quite as cold as it is now.
A tip for those that fall in by yourself and don't have a ladder. Get to the back of the boat, put a foot on your motor and use the trim to trim the motor up. It doesn't take much at all to get you high enough to get your other leg on the boat.
Re: Anyone else ever fell in, in the winter?
I fell into Rough early sprig, air temp was in the upper 30's and water temp inth the low 40's, went all the way down as my rain suit filled up with water, had a hard time getting back into boat as my boat did not have trim on motor, but my co angler saved my butt, did not have change of cloths either but kept on fishing about froze, and hypotherma was setting in by the time I got back ti dock, but I made it. Also I learned to swim that day as I was not a good swimmer at that time but I learn qiuck, I thank the good lord that Gary Bonnet was in the boat with me tha day as it is hard to get back into a bass boat.
Re: Anyone else ever fell in, in the winter?
I have yet to fall out of my boat...knock on wood...but I have taken a few dips during winter while fishing streams in Northern UT! Talk about cold! Filled my waders right up! Air temps in single digits and water temps around freezing.....good thing my car was fairly close, and I could pump the heat on asap!

Dac... getting on the motor and using the Trim to lift you really does work. My dad had read a post that said that once. He was in Alabama in the winter (40 some water temp) and fell in. B/C he had so many clothes on b/c of the cold weather and them being wet this TWO buddies could not lift him back in the boat so he remembered reading about the trim and went to the motor and it raised him on up into the boat. They went back to the house to change and warm up... then they had a good laugh but it was scary for a little while.
Re: Anyone else ever fell in, in the winter?
Actually I was wet twice in the same day. It was early November last year when I went camping across from Grave Yard Island at Dale Hollow. The water was high enough that it made my camp site an island also. I was by myself and camping mind you so your mind plays tricks with you over night. I tied my boat up to the nearest tree which was every bit of 30-40 ft up the bank. I experienced 20-25mph wind gusts that night. When I woke up I got the fire stoking again and fixed coffee. Once all the clothes/coveralls were on I went to the top of the sloping hill to find NO BOAT. Holy crap!!!! No boats around, no traffic or anyone to yell to. Ok...so after walking to the tip of the island I found my boat floating away downstream 50 yards away in the flats. So I did what every boat owner would do....I got wet. Once I parked the boat I went to dry off by the fire. After my shoes dried and I changed into dry clothes I tried to go fishing. Off I go to a point behind a bluff wall to drift into the current. So the plan, tie off to shore pull back and anchor in the current so as to not drift around so much. As I approached the bank I drifted slowly toward a nice root to tie off too. The root was too far to reach from the boat so with rope in hand I got on land and tied to the root. Then to my surprise the slate I was standing on broke under my feet and in the drink I went. Twice in one hours time I'm wet. So back to the fire and coffee I go shivering. It turned out to be one of the best days fishing I have had in a while...two 6's and several 4's but I wouldnt do it again if asked to repeat the same day. That waters tooooo cold.
Re: Anyone else ever fell in, in the winter?
I have fallen in while wading in the winter and it was cold. I carry a first aid kit and a survival kit that I bought at Wal mart that has different items in it. I tried to find a link to it online, but had no luck.
My son and I were muskie fishing Friday in Barren River from a canoe. He hooked and landed this 41 inch muskie:

And then he went up onto the bank to fish for a while. I stayed in the canoe, had a hook up with a nice muskie, made some dumb moves and flipped myself out of the canoe. I had a big carhart coat on and steel toed boots. Wasn't wearing a life jacket. That was probably one of the top 30 dumbest things that I have ever done. I couldn't touch the bottom and the water sure was cold. The first thing that ran through my mind was, I can't believe that I am in this river... and under water.
I lost the fish but managed to hold onto my rod and climb out of there. Was even able to cast into the canoe and hook it before it got away.
Anyone else ever took a spill into the water in the winter?
Numerous times,I was the youngest of 5 brothers,we grew up on a big creek and I was always the "Ice Tester" in winter.I fell off a barge in the intercoastal canal in winter once with coveralls and rubber boots on,I would have been in trouble except for a deck hands fast action in tossing me a line.
Can't count the times I walked home stiff legged and shivering frozen, don't care to do it anymore though.
Re: Anyone else ever fell in, in the winter?
About thirty years ago my Dad was trout fishing one night at wolf creek dam. It was Jan or Feb and very cold. Somehow while putting more Coleman fuel in a lantern both he and the boat caught on fire. he dove into lake Cumberland and says he could see the flames from the fire as he swam back up. He splashed water into the boat to put out the fire as my uncle retreated to the rear of the boat in shock,
Luckily he was able to get back into the boat relatively unharmed. Another boat had witnessed the incident and brought my Dad a snow suit. My dad left the snowsuit in the other fisherman's pickup when he went back to the ramp. Pretty wild story.
Just remembered that it was prob 40 years ago because the fished out of an aluminum boat and would take a fifty gallon steel drum and cut it so it was only about a couple feet high. Then they would put a bunch of sand in it and then charcoal and light it to stay warm. They were some hard core crazy fishermen. They had pictures of lots of huge rainbows they caught though.

If you fish winter in a boat or on ice you need this arctic armor suit
