There is no doubt about it...pretty simple, if you don't find fish...you won't catch fish. You can be the best at every technique there is, have the best boat, best rods, best reels and all the lures ever made...but if you are not fishing where there are fish, you are gonna look good but you aren't going to catch anything but maybe a cold.
This is what I teach in my winter classes and on some of my focused teaching guide trips...how to "eliminate water" to find the fish.
2 things in my opinion. Time on the water. and a 1197si humminbird.

Buck Perry says "Knowledge is the key to fishing success". I don't believe everything that he said but this is true. The more you go, the more you know. Every time I go out I take a look at the surroundings and my mind goes to "fishing archives" and I try to put as many past experiences into play as I can. The more you remember from yesterday, the more successful you will be tomorrow. Pay attention.
#1 find the fish
#2 confidence that you are on fish and you can catch them
#3 dial in the right baits, color, Speed and technique that the fish want that day.
#4 time on the water.
#5 stay attuned to what the fish are telling you and is the pattern, weather, etc. changing?
#6 start thinking of excuses.
If you see fish in the area, then fish in the area!
