Re: Japan earthquake and tsunami
This is very devistating.
I don't think Japan is a wealthy nation (compared to Sudia Arabia, Kuwait). Certainly no wealthier than Canada. I think they are still recovering from a ression that has lasted 10+ years.
This nuclear disaster is very concering. How much land will be contaminated, they did not have that much to start with. Then you have all those people just stacked in the area. Reports of evacuation of 180,000 people in a 12 mile radius. That is dense.
I think we only see the most affluent japanese here. Like most, only the most affluent can afford travel here. I don't think we see many of the regular japanese people, the plumbers, bakers and candle stick makers.
God Bless them.
Re: Japan earthquake and tsunami
Japan's is the third largest economy in the world, behind us and China. Bob, I get your point, but I don't remember us asking for any help after Katrina, and with Brownie doing such a fantastic job, I doubt that we would have accepted it if it were offered. Besides, the scale of this disaster is much worse than Katrina.
Re: Japan earthquake and tsunami
Japan is wealthy.
This disaster dwarfs Katrina.
Public and private donations from Japan to the U.S. totaled $13 Million for the Katrina relief effort, according to one account I read.

I thought this was low.......really low, and then I started to dig.
13 million is a generous number..........Japan itself donated 250,000 while the private sector donated 13 million or so.........
I say WOW.......3rd largest economy in the world, and an economy that is wealthy due only to US..........
On another note....I read the single largest donor country was Kuwait. They donated 500 million...........HOLY CRAP.
Not only that, but most middle east countries that are considered our allies......turkey, kuwait, qutar, etc, etc, all gave significant amounts.
I say send japan what they sent us............
Later,
Geo

I tend to agree with you. I'm not a nuclear scientist by any means but I think I recall one of the "experts" saying on the news this week that the contaminated land would be totally useless....forever....or at least useless for any man, woman or child living today until they die in their old age, in other words an entire generation of people.
Not wanting a political debate but the things people say really ticks me off....Bush: "Read my lips, no new taxes". Clinton; "I did not have sex with that woman". Nobama: "The 30 year old nuclear reactors/power plants in the United States are safe and there is no need for a detailed safety check "at this time". Man I just ain't buying it...let mother nature raise her hand like she did with Japan and I guess we'll see how well those nuclear power plants hold up.
God Bless the people in Japan is about all I know to say at this point.
