Re: NFL Lockout, Draft and such
That sounds like a pretty good D-line. I figure about the same record as last year.
I'm honestly shocked that DT's could possibly be drafted in the first round, the NFL is a pass happy league just waiting to beat up on an inside team.A solid CB would have been a better choice, but screw Detroit anyway.
You are correct that it is a pass happy league but after Peterson from LSU, far and above the best DB, the a dropped to the DB from Nebraska there were way more Defensive Linemen worthy of high picks. Plus a QB rushed into throws or sitting flat on his back are hard to complete passes. That is what a Defensive Lineman will give you. I think QB's are drafted for the fact they handle the ball every play on offense plus other obvious reasons. Defensive Linemen are in every play on defense either stopping the run or rushing the QB. Peterson was probably the best talent in the draft but because he is not involved in every play on defense he went where he did
Their salary is ridiculous. I love the NFL as much as anyone but give me a break. If the owners don't do something now, it may be too late next year. Look at it like the U.S. economy, sorry but EVERYONE has a bossman.
I just think this bidding war has to slow down or else.
Their salary is ridiculous? Look up the average NFL salary, not what the superstars make but the average. Then look at career length of the players and the debilitating injuries they leave the game with.
The owners have to do something? Are you serious? They are making billions, the NFL is not going broke and there dang sure won't be NFL owners in the food stamp office any time soon. In all actuality the owners do not even pay the players, their money comes from the TV contracts so in effect the networks pay them. The owners get all the concessions and ticket revenue etc. but there is no owner paying the money out of their own pocket.
I wish I had HBO so I could see that show....maybe it would sway my opinion a little because I'm against the Union on this. It's entertainment and these guys know this going in...shouldn't be a surprise. Some of them could have chosen other means of income. Doctors, Lawyers, Construction, Military and on and on but they chose the NFL and by doing so they get more money than I ever will make. Kudos to them!! They have been gifted with some talent and size and they choose to either use it or not.
Tim I respect your opinion as a media guy and a former pro athlete but have never been on the side of Unions. Some say without the present players there would be no NFL but I disagree. Without owners no NFL would exist and even if new owners stepped up they would want the lions share of their investments and I agree with that. IMO the second, third, fourth string guys would be as exciting to watch and play as good as the guys now.
I don't have the stats but how many guys play well now who didn't go first round? I bet alot and I bet more are sitting on the bench ready to showcase their talent.
I guess with what info I get from watching ESPN, ABC or reading something on-line I have made my mind up but am always willing to see the other side and see if it sways my opinion.:)
The owners make their money off the ticket revenue and concessions. The TV money is what pays the players. The owners have more than made their money back on their investments. This is not like a normal business.
Re: NFL Lockout, Draft and such
Thanks Tim I had no idea of how that worked. That setup sure makes a man think. First thing that comes to mind is why can't they be self insured? Meaning the owners, players or percentages of revenue be dedicated toward an insurance or retirement fund? Maybe they already do that? I know it would take an administrator to maintain or police that but that's just how it is.
Re: NFL Lockout, Draft and such
$9,000,000,000
31 teams
I think 54 man roster
Add 200 retired players from each team
254 x 31 = 8128
Divide the money $6 Billion for players $3 Billion for owners
Each owner gets $96,774,419.55
8128 players get $738,188.97
Maybe it is not that easy but there is a STAGGERING amount of money in the table
@ $40 a yard I would have to mow 225 MILLION YARDS
