if his motor is dying, the prop is not the problem...i can put whatever prop i want on my boat and it still runs.

yeah...but mine would die also.....i would have to let up on the throttle to keep it going.....because the bigger Prop was overloading my motor,,,,,just tryin to help the guy out..... just one fisherman to another... but ur right it could be something else, because theres motors can be trecky...:cool:

i can see it not revving as high, but it shouldnt kill it. if hes already used this prop in the past with no issues,theres no way its a prop issue. id go with either ignition or fuel problem. they both have a habit of running while not under load,then sputtering out when power is applied
If it have a electric primer on it push it a few times while trying to excellerate. If it helps then you have a fuel issue if it doesn't then it's electrical.
Lots of advice here, some good, some funny, some bad.
I would try a couple of quick fixes. 1) Compression check. If you have good compression thats a very +++ sign. 2) Spark. check all plugs for good spark. 3) spun prop is possible but usually they will grab and then let go but a run with a known good prop will tell the tale.
Finally if these quick fixes are not helping take it to a certified (good) mechanic. I have seen so many people destroy good motors drilling out carb jets, crossing wires etc. it is not funny. In the end a good mechanic may be able to straighten it out cheaper and with fewer headaches that you can to it.

I agree with kydonky you could do more harm than good. You do't want to throw good money into bad. My mech. has a flat rate fee of $50 runs compression check and all vital signs and other tests and will tell you what the problem is.
My yamaha 50 hp did the same thing few years back...I used mercury carb tune up in a can. Sprayed in the carbs while idleing in water til it bout dies rev it up and repeat.It was 12 bucks a can but it worked. Motor would run fine until u put a load on it..cut out and sputter. Its carb tune up by mercury NOT CARB CLEANER! Hope this helps u out.

Another point about a spun prop. If you have a spun prop your engine will rev at high RPM and the boat will barely move. This is because the prop shaft is spinning freely. So if you get high RPM and no power prop may be the issue.
If you have problems just getting the motor to increase RPM under power or load you may have electrical or fuel problem. So if you give it full trottle and the RPM does not increase and the motor RPM falls or bogs down you probably do not have a spun prop, more likely fire or fuel.
That was why I suggested it might be a spun prop. I had that happen to me last year. But without knowing all the details it is hard to say.

when on the water push the key primer and see if it picks up. If it doesn't more than likely it's electrical. If it's electrical and you don't have experence working on boat motors take it to a pro. You will spend more money just hanging parts on it till you find the problem than paying someone to fix it. I have seen this to many times.
