Re: Buffett demands to pay more tax? An alternative view!
How about the 47 million families that don't pay ONE RED CENT it taxes. How about we charge them 10 percent or 5 percent??
Geo, neither Repulicans of Democrats have proposed raising the tax on the low income brackets or raising the threshold to pay tax.
From what I hear in the news is that nobody wants any tax whatsoever. No tax on the wealthy (they earned their money), no tax on the poor (they can't afford it) and no tax on anybody else (they have paid enough).
Yet everyone wants the potholes fixed, they want the police to patrol their neighborhood, they want their trash picked up, they want clean rivers and they want to feel secure with the finest military establishment in the world.
Complaints on this board of the tax on gasoline. That if somehow we were to remove the tax on gasoline the price of gas would be affordable.
Look at the airlines. They recieved a break on FAA taxes yet did not lower fairs, kept the offset to help profits. I don't see oil companies doing any diferent out of the goodness of their hearts.
Oil is around $85 now and gas is still at about $3.50. $0.80 higher than last year with oil prices lower and demand the same or lower. We have now be conditioned to pay > $3.50 for gas. It's not coming down no matter the price of oil because they know we will pay that.
The Oil companies are not going to build us a new 4 lane highway, no private company is because it is just not economically feasable to aquire the land and make the investment.
So somehow this gas tax is just awful, but nobody is giving up using the interstate. Instead you hear "they need to fix that curve, need a guadrail there, this boat ramp is too bumpy ".
I think Warren Buffet can afford to pay a little more tax.
Re: Buffett demands to pay more tax? An alternative view!
typical repub to say that a billionare only paying 17% is fair and someone working at mcdonalds making $10000 dollars a year needs to pay !0%--the facts are that you are right that 50% of people dont pay directly into the irs but they do pay taxes--property taxes, state taxes,gas taxes,food taxes,city taxes, taxes on their pay checks--the vast majority of these 50% of folks live below the poverty level and you want them to pay more in taxes than warren who pays 17% unbelivable--geo your exactly right there are a percentage of folks who sit on their butts not working and milk the system and dont contribute one thing to our society accept being a parasite however its not right to punish the entire 50% for a few freeloaders--when those 50% do get their "tax payday" as you call it us business folks love it because the poor and middle class actually pump this money back into our businesses which benifit us all--thats called trickle up economics which actually works--when the wealthy keep their tax dollars it trickles nowhere except their bank accounts
Re: Buffett demands to pay more tax? An alternative view!
Thank you Geo for illustrating just how intransigent Tea Party Republicans really are. There is just no reasoning with any of you on this issue, and that's one of the main reasons the US credit rating was just downgraded.

THERE is reasoning with me.......We have an entitlement mentality.....People who pay no taxes feel ENTITLED to government handouts......
I am perfectly fine paying the taxes I pay and would be perfect fine with a raising of my taxes...IF and ONLY IF those freeloaders at the bottom of the pile were held accountable and paid some taxes.
So, yea, those in lower income brackets do pay
* city tax
* sales tax
* locality tax
* fuel tax
BUT....if they don't pay ANY payroll tax and if the don't pay any medicare tax.....WHO THE HELL will pay for their social security and medicare benefits.......ME.
Look, I know we are going to have to make some very hard decisions in the future. I want the decisions to effect everyone. NOT just the rich, not just the poor, not just the middle, but until we have some entitlement reform at the bottom, I simply don't TRUST government to do anything promised. NOTHING.
Don't RAISE my taxes until you've made serious headway in entitlement reform......then come talk to me about raising taxes.
Re: Buffett demands to pay more tax? An alternative view!
This isn't about raising YOUR taxes. This is about raising taxes on people making over a million a year. But in typical Tea Party fashion, your knee-jerk reaction is to reject it out of hand. And while you have a point about entitlement reform, which by the way Buffett also makes, at least there has been SOME compromise from the left on spending cuts, and I know of nobody who has signed any pledges regarding spending cuts. There has been absolutely ZERO compromise from Republicans when it comes to generating more revenue, and the deficit will always be a fact of life until that changes.

Do you REALLY think it would stop there. Everything I've seen so far from the current admin starts at 250k. While I don't make that, that is a FAR CRY from a millionaire......
NO, you cannot believe for one single SECOND that they really mean the millionaires and billionaires....
We don't have a revenue problem..we have a SPENDING PROBLEM. Fix it first...........then come and talk to me.
Later,
Geo
Re: Buffett demands to pay more tax? An alternative view!
Buffett gets his money from investments and does not creat one job. If he gets his money from a business he would pay 38% in taxes and he would be a job creator.
We do not have a revenue problem we have a spending problem and now with the current administration we have a HUGE SPENDING PROBLEM This administration has spent trillions of dollars and has nothing to show for it. I hate the way they spend my tax dollars and I do not want to send them any more.
What Buffett is saying is take 1.00 out of the system tax it .38 now you have .62 and you will take another.37 to handle the money and then you will put .25 back into the system. If this makes sense to you I see why you support Obama.

No, that doesn't make sense, and neither does you twisting what he said like that. All he's saying is to tax the dollar he makes at the same or higher rate than you tax the dollar a middle-class American makes. And please don't put words in my mouth and say that I "support" Obama. I might defend him when I think he's being blamed for something that's not his fault, because not everything that's wrong in today's world IS his fault, but I wouldn't say that I support him in general.

So now you're throwing up a strawman. Buffett can't mean what he said, because of what Obama said!
I'll say it again. There's just no reasoning with you on this subject.
Re: Buffett demands to pay more tax? An alternative view!
I think it's just the way nature is, for the strong and fit to look down on the weak. animals do it, the strong kill and feed on the sick and weak. and people aren't any different. the ones that are healthy and strong and have a good job. think it will always be like that. and it's possible they will never know what it's like to be without a job. there will always be people that are poor and need help, and out of the many that are poor and need help. there will be a few that are lazy and will feed off the programs that help those in need. no one knows what tommorrow will bring our way, so many things can change overnight. the programs that some say are wasteful handouts, could be the the very programs that feed their children next month or year. it's good to have social programs to help those in need. if you are living so high on the hog, that you don't have compassion for the underprivileged, you need to sit down and have a good talk with yourself. I sure would be a happy camper, if I could make a million dollars a year. and pay 1/2 of it in taxes. so I say let those that make the big money, pay more taxes.
