Myself Army brat and proud of it. My grand father died from mustard gas my father was WWII, Korea and 3 terms Veitnam. Nursing home now with dementia doesn't know who I am ,but wants to get back in the army. Pure soldier.
Usaf 1965-1969
It's always interesting to talk with the WWII guys, what few of them are left...whenever I see a 70/80 something year old man wearing a WWII ball cap or U.S.S. whatever Navy Ship, I always try to make an effort to talk to them and ask them some things.
Kind of thinking my dad joined the Navy during WWII because he was tired of skeeters, snakes, etc...growing up on the farm and eating a lot of beans. Actually he joined because work was slim to none at the time, his own dad couldn't afford to feed him anymore, he'd been working full time after dropping out of school in the 6th grade so dad lied about his age to get in and his dad swore to it. His mom (my grandma) wasn't around, she'd done flew the coop back when he was 7 or 8, moved to the big city of Ohio or Virgina somewhere to find her a city fella.
But I sure do wish he were around so I could ask him why he chose the Navy...especially since he couldn't swim a lick before joining and believe it or not fella's he couldn't swim a lick after getting out either.
Yep...I sure do wish he was still around.
A little twist.
If you had it to do again, would you go the same path?
I'll start. YES.
To all, Vets day is 11 Nov, a couple days out. Well, with in an 8 inch burstng radius.
So to all who did it for our Uncle.....Thanks! And glad we're all here to remember it, and as a result support the younger guys now going in harms way so we don't have to.

I would have done it again in a heartbeat....But this time I think I would have joined the Air Force..Man talked to way too many peeps and friends who joined the AF...AF was too much like a 9-5 job and that's what type of Military job I wanted....
8 years as an 11B Infantryman
12 years as 76Y / 91A Supply / Quartermaster...Fell in love with working in supply..Enjoyed all the paperwork that had to be done each day, month and year..Just seemed to come to me so naturally....
