Re: Best fishing poles
Any of the newer style rods being made today in the price range of $80 or so will be a great step up for you. I like the BPS Carbonlite for baitcasting and also Kvd quantum spinning rod. These rods are so much lighter and sensitive than the poles made 5 yrs ago. I would like to try the abu garcia veritas as my next purchase. Good luck...You cant go wrong with any of the poles discussed!

Re: Best fishing poles
Only problem that I've had out of my veritas are the weak guides. I've broke the tip once, had the inside of the tip guide come out, and broke a guide that was 1/2 way down the pole. If the guides were stronger, it would be great.
I'm going with a Denali rod next. Gonna give one of those a shot.

Re: Best fishing poles
Many of the Bass Pro Rods would be a step up for you and some of their rods are very good.

This what I was thinking too. Great value with these rods. After you've used them a few years, you'll then know what to look for when you step up again.

Re: Best fishing poles
Abu Garcia Veritas best rod for the price. I have a very pricey spinning rod(ESOX) and i have a Veritas spinning rod and i use the Veritas more than the ESOX.

Re: Best fishing poles
I use the veritas as well - it is unreal how light it is and the action is great. Before these rods came out I bought an All-Pro rod and now I wish I hadn't...would rather have two veritas rods!
I also use the bass pro extreme rods and like those as well. They usually go on sale January or Feb. for around $69.00.

You are exactly right. I had a Bass Pro Extreme and several Field and Stream Rods and fished at Kentucky Lake with them for about three days. I also used an Ugly Stick. I started noticing the differences. Mainly the weight of the cheaper rods wear you out if you are fishing all day.
I still use the Extreme some but I have since upgraded to Shimano Crucials. You will really notice the difference once you start fishing with the different rods and you realize why some rods are considered so much better than others. I reckon GLoomis is the Holy Grail. That would be my next upgrade. But I am very happy with Crucials.
As for the others; those are the rods I lend out to people that don't have rods. I do think I may look at the Veritas next time I need a rod.

Re: Best fishing poles
:) Man....you guys nust be rich buying $69-100 rods. Me....I buy $29.99 Shakespeare Ugly Sticks, cause I need to save the other money for boat and truck gas (a little) and bourbon (a lot).

Re: Best fishing poles
I realize it s a different price range, but it's hard to beat a the Shimano Cumara and the GLoomis GLX. They're a lil pricey but great for fishing all day. Though one of my favorite rods are last years shimano crucials. Im not as crazy about the new ones for some reason. But as MLFSPCS said earlier, it's best to head to a shop and try a bunch out.

Re: Best fishing poles
My recommendation is to go to BPS or some other store with a good selection and hold the rod while gently dragging the tip across a crack in the floor. This is about the only way to really compare rods side by side. You will be able to feel the difference in sensitivity. [Last time I did this, I settled on Abu Garcia Veritas or BPS Carbonlite, but it's YOUR determination that matters!]
Also, using flourocarbon line will make a BIG difference in sensitivity over mono.

Re: Best fishing poles
I'm in the same boat. I'm looking for a good rod like a St. Croix or something of that nature. What do you all think of St. Croix, the Carrot Stix or even the Ducket Rod (i think it's the magic stix). The rod skeet reese uses look like a decent rod. So what do you all think?
