Well, if you had one on, you must have been throwing the right bait. May just have to use a leader to keep her from breaking off your line.
My son landed 7 in two weeks time and 5 of them were on a homemade bait that he's been making. He makes them out of fox squirrel tails that he collected during squirrel season.
Here's a couple of the fish he caught and a picture of one of his baits. He's sold a few of them.

I was fishing in the Markland Dam tailwaters a few yrs. ago. A heavy fish hit my jig, and immediately jumped and threw the hook. When I reeled back in, a lamprey ~6 inches long was impaled on the hook. First time I ever saw one, and hopefully the last.
