Re: alabama rig
Why does it kill fish? That's the first I have heard of that.
Yum has some at Dicks for $14.99 that's about the cheapest I have seen by a name brand company. They look good.
Read the post prior to mine, alot of guys feel this way. It is not a knock and I don't blame people for fsihing it, but alot of fish get gullet hooked on this rig and hooks in their eyes and gills..
Ask around you'll hear some others speaking of this as well. Also this is ''ONE'' of tthe reasons BASS tourney's elected to not allow it...

Re: alabama rig
if you look around or talk to people who fish the rig you will hear many story's of how many hooks they had in the fish,Usually one in the mouth, back, side, fins,or even eye. Here is a few pics i have found of how fish are getting hooked.Granted it may not happen every time but it does happen and the damage to fish to me is not worth it.
Granted i do use the rig on occasion but i use a 3 wire with texas rigged baits,as if i do catch a fish i usually only get him one time with a hook and that is the bait he hit.So it is safer IMO this way,Plus it reduces your chances of hanging the bait up on bottom structure. Also if you do catch more than one fish on the rig ,For the love of Jesus don't just grab the lure and hold it up to show the fish off like the guy in this second pic.Look at how much strain and stress he is putting on the fish in the middle .
I do not know how to post pictures on this forum yet but here is the link

Re: alabama rig
why?!?!
.
My personal opinion on why I dislike the a-rig which may be different from everyone else is that I got sick of untangling the line and hooks every other cast, I haven't caught very many fish on it so my confidence is low, I feel like it is not worth the time and effort when I can catch just as many big fish the old fashion way with one hook. I don't get the same satisfaction of casting and reeling what feels like a catfish pole rigged with chicken livers on it as I do with getting a taptaptap on my line and setting the hook. To me, that's fishin.

Re: alabama rig
i have "DONATED" all my A-RIGS to the "feed-a-striper" charity on lake cumberland. as "ARTCARNEY" said....stripers love em. the only problem is when one striper hits the second one is not far behind and its dang near impossible to pull 2 or more stripers to the boat on the rig. all my encounters ended in disaster with the fish tangling in some unseen snag.
i do know there have been times when my buddies couldnt catch bass on anything else....in its element and during its time it is bad @$$. but i wont be throwing it anymore as i am sure those stripers i got hung up were excessively stressed by the time they got loose....or worse they may have died.
i would rather feel a crankbait rod load up, or a the "tap" on a jig rod....but thats just me:D

Re: alabama rig
hmm... well after all these remarks ive come to the conclusion it is DEFINITELY not worth it, ill stick to my good ole cranks, spinners and soft tackle. i hate the fact that i could kill fish using it, its not worth the catch to me to take the risk of killing a fish. thats not what fishin is about in my opinion.
Thanks guys

if i were you i would at least give it a shot and make a determination for yourself. take note of how differet people are rigging it (texas style for eg.) that reduces the chance for foul hooked fish. heck i foul hook a bunch of fish on jerk/slash stickbaits , its just the nature of the bait,.

Re: alabama rig
i think you should give it a try ,but use the lighter rigs and texas rig the hooks like me if you are concerned about harm to fish.It is a totally different experience than what we are accustomed to that is for sure.I also have not caught a fish on it yet but i can see why they work well. But at the same time my father and a friend was both throwing it the other day and dad caught a 5plb largemouth and my buddy caught a 4 pound small mouth where i caught nothing lol
You dont have to spend a load of money either.if you have a med heavy rod already pick up a 3 wire rig and some weighted swimbait hooks texas rig them and give it a go .3 wire rigs are about 10-12 bucks

ONLY BASS Elite series banned it's use. It can be used in BASS opens, weekend series, BASS federation, FLW, BFL, MLF(BASS Elite anglers participate in this series and DO throw it) and many others llow it as well. It hasn't won any MAJOR BASS or FLW (not talking about BFL or Stren) pro events this year!! I've seen on TV many caught on it (VERY few foul hooked or gullet, I watched Jason Quinn catch near 60 pounds on MLF today and not one single gullet or foul hooked fish) and have witnessed several caught on it as well as catching a few myself and have seen VERY few foul hooked or gullet hooked. I've personally caught more foul (and gullet)hooked fish on crankbaits and spinnerbaits? Oh well, to each his own but as some have stated it has it's place. I just don't like folks being misinformed. Folks, just don't take my word or anyone else's for that matter just try it for yourself and you will see two things, 1. It is not a magic lure and 2. It doesn't hook or harm the fish anymore than a lure with 2 or 3 treble hooks for sure. And one other thing, the sky is not falling!! LOL :)
Later,
Tim

Re: alabama rig
Everyone has an opinion on this deal thats for sure.
Tim if they aren't getting hooked and harmed by this rig, why are alot of states regulating how many swimbaits you can rig on it??????
Hmmm???

Re: alabama rig
I'm not saying that fish can't be foul hooked or aren't being foul hooked. but in a week at KY Lake last fally my partner and I boated around 300 fish and not a single one of them was gullet hooked or foul hooked....We were throwing them with open hooks, not texas rigged...I see the possibility for it to happen, but the possibility also exists with any multiple hook bait...If you've thrown a spinnerbait with a trailer hook much then you've seen the damage that rear hook can do, be it in the fishes gullet or by hooking it outside of the mouth...I love catching fishing and firmly believe in the conservation of our fisheries and will continue to throw the A rig....If I start to foul hook a bunch of fish or damage them, I will change my methods...Until then I'll be out there chuckin it with my telephone pole

Same here.
Plus, if I hook one that looks like it's going to die, into the freezer it goes. The A-rig has been the greatest invention for meat hunters! I can't wait until summer when I can toss it into schools of white bass! Talk about a quick limit on those dudes! :)
