You will have a blast crappie fishing in Mississippi and I like to fish new places too. I grew up in Gadsden, AL. We lived 2 miles from the Coosa River, 30 minutes from Weiss Lake and about an hour from G-ville. In the fishing world it don't get much better than that. We would still travel to Mississippi to fish and Dad would take me up to Pickwick once or twice a year and usually between Christmas and New Years we'd load up and drive to South Florida just to fish for a week. Best of all we would take saltfishing trips out in the Gulf and beach fish at Perdido Key. Dad worked at the Goodyear plant and was an outboard mechanic/boat outfitter on the side so he had "fishing buddies" everywhere south of the Mason-Dixon. I got to go with him on a lot of his "business trips". I know where your coming from by wanting to fish different places and you won't regret going to Mississippi.
I miss my Daddy. :(
Gotta say it, RollTide!!
my friend and I were crappie fishing lake weiss a few years back, and one afternoon we ran up the lake to where the coosa river has big logs piled up on both sides, that stick up high out of the water. if you know where I'm talking about, we got in some of the best striper fishing, had a blast, not any size but a lot of them. good fishing down there. worked with some guys from Birmingham, that told me the best crappie fishing down there, was a river near Birmingham called black river I think, not for sure about the name. it's been a few years back.

It sounds like you were close to or up into Little River, that's the by far the best area for linesides in Weiss Lake.
Not familar with a Black River near Birmingham but there is a lot of local slang for bodies of water in Alabama so there very well could be a Black River near Birmingham especially if it's a manmade canal or something. Most everything in Birmingham revolves around Lay Lake and I totally understand why. I have a first cousin that's buddies with Russ Lane and Russ is THE MAN when it comes to Lay Lake and the Coosa River system. There is no one even close. If you ever need a guide in that area it is worth it to contract him and I know firsthand that he is one heck of a nice guy.
There is a Black Warrior River close to Tuscaloosa and my alma mater The University of Alabama. RollTide!! I had to say it.
