When it came to my wife adn I buying a house I measured the boat its a 19ft ranger with a swing away tounge so its about 26 or so feet. I told the realtor first and foremost if the garage isnt atleast 28 feet deep I dont care about the rest of the house. of course i cleared this with the wife first. And now that the realtor adn us were on the same page. I would walk in a house pull out the tape measure in the garage and it was yea or ney on lookign at the rest of the house.. Sure some of the houses had nicer options but we found a house with a 30 ft deep 2 car garage with a one acre lot and good neighbors so we bought it. But I just told the realtor if the boat wouldnt fit we wasnt buying the house cause i aint keeping my boat outside all the time.
A friend of mine's home is my dream come true. It's a Rancher, and the back half of the house sits over his 2 lane 45 foot long in ground garage with garage doors on both sides, and driveway access in and out both sides. He keeps his boat hooked up and just drives in and parks it, then drops the doors. When its time to go again, he's out the other side and on his way. In the mean while, one full lane is open to his wifes car and the little 2 door Kia he runs to work and back with.
Worst thing that has happened to us, wife and I found a perfect brick rancher, brand new, great price in the $180K range. But according to the HOA, to house our old pontoon boat, we'd have had to build a brick garage adding another $40-50K to the total cost. To mkae that happened, for the first 4 years liveing there we'd have had to live in the garage and rent the house out to make the payments :-) For whatever reason, the wife didn't warm up to that concept.
Our boat is in the basement. There's wing walls on the end of the house with a 9 foot wide GD and a second driveway leading to it. There's a double wide garage door on the other end of the house for cars. The basement is unfinished and we can get our 18.5 foot Skeeter with a non folding trailer and our Silverado crew cab truck in the basement hooked together and ready to go. That sure makes boat maintenance and fishing preparation easy.
Oh man, I am jealous now. I have a two-car garage but no room to park in it. When I move I hope to find a home with a basement. A large detached garage with a pull-thru bay would of course be ideal ;)
I have a two car garage that my boat fits in if I angle it. I never though it would fit but I tilt the big motor all the way down and have to angle it "just right", but it fits. Of course I have to scrape snow and ice off of my wifes car during the winter, and warm it up well before she's ready to leave in the morning, and hear her complain about my boat getting better treatment than her, but hey, you gotta prioritize Jack. ;)
This EXACTLY what I do...

Humans don't own the right to claim a piece of the Earth. If you are of the opinion that you can, you are sadly mistaken.

Thanks guys for all the input. I currently rent now and have a garage that a man can live in so I guess ive been spoiled. A 20 foot garage will not work if I done my math correctly so I think we may buy an older home with a detached garage that I can add some footage to or have a home built in fayette Co. I just dont like the HOA telling me where to place my stuff like if I got a camper or something in the future.

Shawn
now, your using your head. that HOOD deal is ok for some folks. I have a Daughter thats one of them. but I wouldn't buy a house at 1/2 price, where someone else could tell me what to do with it.

I would love to move to Scott since I work at the Yota but the wife wants to stay in Lexington. My garage now is 720 SF I have found 2 that are 484 and 528 but both homes are not what we are looking for. Very torn but the search will go on!!
