My point was that there are a large number of us retired military that are not disabled and still able to function as soldiers and are trained to do so. Having re read my post, I can see where you may have taken my comments to mean I was throwing rocks at folks who draw SS Disability Benefits before normal retirement age....my actual intent was that if you are drawing SS Disability benefits or Military Disablity, then I would consider you not combat functional.


As for fraud in the SS and Military Disability funding...that is another topic.


One thing about Discussion Board Posts.....they are like emails in that two people can read an email or Discussion Board post and read two different meanings....again my intention was not to throw rocks at anyone disabled.

If we go into Default and can't pay our debts they will stop paying Social Security to the retired people and that's going to be a screwed up mess that will really piss me off big time. You want to see a march on Washington full or retires then just let the deadline for the debt ceiling laps and see what happens.

I just retired this last February and am finally able to get back some of the money that the Feds took out of my pay checks over the last 40 years.

IMHO they better get moving on something and get the Government back in operation sooner rather than later.

Remember that if we go into default it not only affects Americans but the rest of the world economies. We won't be in good standing with everyone else and they won't lend us money. The world's other leaders are watching to see what we do.

SSI and SSI Disability are lumped into the same block of crap. I guess if you pay into social security for 40 years, and then become disabled, you should be able to get some of your money.

Of course......If the gubment GAVE me every single penny of it today, and stopped taking it out of my check, I will take my own chances and opt out of any future benefits from SSI.

Not too sure about Medicare, and opting out of that though :) .. Who knows how much medical will cost in the future..........

Well Geo you are smarter than most of them then. Medical costs can wipe out a lot of people in a big hurry. Medicare only pays 80% so you need to have a supplemental insurance program to cover the rest. And then one needs prescription drug insurance too.

I had to go get a new prescription yesterday after visiting my Doctor. He prescribed some medicine that I have to take for ten days. I got 20 pills and it cost over 130 dollars for just the medicine.

I have two other pills that both cost over 300 each. Medicine is way too expensive to buy without some type of help.

Just hope and pray that the Government doesn't default and the stock market doesn't tank when people panic like they did back in the 1930's. Stock markets are great when they earn you money but nothing is guaranteed and your stocks can become worthless pieces of paper. You may want to invest in gold before it's too late.

I'm getting a bad feeling about this Government and the way things are going right now. Both sides have dug in their heels and no one is giving an inch. They can't even agree to put this off for another three months or so.

But like others said if they don't take care of the debt and people can't get their social security checks many will be left in a hopeless situation. Most people don't have enough savings to live on that money for the rest of their lives without their social security checks. I'm worried because both sides are not talking like they did in the past.

I would encourage everyone to make contact with their congressman and senators and tell them to get to work on making a deal NOW.

I was watching the news tonight and they were taking about how the Government shut down has shut down the American Crab Fishing Fleet. The Wizzard Crab Fishing Boat is parked at the dock waiting for permits before they can head out to sea and start fishing for crabs. The season starts today or tomorrow or this weekend and they won't have the necessary permits to start fishing in time. The Russians will be out on the Bering Sea fishing and corner the market while our guys sit at the dock losing 1000 dollars a day.

anyone remember this.......I thought we were told the whole reason that the gubment got involved in our healthcare system was to curb costs. Medical devices, procedures, drugs things like that. Is any of that even addressed?im asking because obamacare is here to stay for the immediate future. IMO it will be trashed once the fools who voted in Obama realize what the rest of us already realize and that is it's a train wreck and quite honestly will ruin millions of people before it's fixed....if it can be!!!!

I'm wondering what you think is a better plan DJD? Obviously what we have been doing over the last 50 years has brought us to this point with high medical cost and high drug costs. Do you propose that we continue to do the same thing for the next 50 years knowing that the cost of medicine and drugs far exceeds the normal rate of inflation?

Obamacare is not even started for most people yet you are quick to blame the high price of my medicine on Obamacare. I don't think that Obamacare had anything to do with the price of my meds being over 100 dollars. In fact it's due to what we did before Obamacare even started.

Perhaps we should look at what's going on with health insurance in MA to see how Obamacare will work in the long run. Remember that in MA it's called Romneycare and it's working good there.

Do you believe we should simply let folks die from gunshot wounds if they don't have the resources to pay for the ambulance ride to the hospital where they should have to pay for whatever treatment they might need before they are taken into the facility?...After all it's none of our business and it is their problem.... Either I didn't get my point across properly or you misread...one of the selling points (my memory may be wrong)about obamacare was to get healthcare costs under control. Drug companies have had free reign on what they charge. I have refused meds in the past because of high costs only to have my Doc give me a script for a generic that was a third of the cost of the original med....wanna bet the drug companies wanted him to push the new patented drug and as an incentive he was going to get something for his efforts? So....I never said costs have gone up because of obamacare...I am asking if anyone remembered this being said?

If you think comparing any sort of socialized healthcare program to obamacare is an argument to me your wrong. I don't like any of them. I think they are bandaids to bigger problems and folks fall into that trap of thinking we the american tax payers have messed this up when in fact it wasn't me..Mr. Joe taxpayer. WELL....I guess in a way we are responsible because of our attitude of living life fat dumb and happy and wanting the gubment to take care of us with their money because we all know it does grow on trees for them. A never ending supply of cash free of charge to us tax payers.

Smokers, obesity and general unhealthy living along with folks living longer has healthcare costs up. It was also the greed of gubment and corporations via wasteful spending and the inability of gubment to actually have a freaking backbone and secure the borders or send illegals packing. Lawyers and Judges allowing frivolous lawsuits has Doctors and Hospitals scared!! So now they spend major cash in insurance to hold the lawsuits at bay. You know I work around and in Hospitals ALOT and the major part of any renovation project is infection control. The hospital spends some serious cash on Mechanical systems, hand sanitizers, special walls, special hepa filters, special procedures for looking above the ceiling, special procedures on entering the building, special meetings for contractors and of course the hospital staff to support this. Why did they do this? Ridiculous lawsuits that are not tossed out by judges and actually being won by some for billions of dollars. I'm sure there are other factors but these are the few I can come up with.

A better Healthcare system or keep it the same?? My immediate idea is pretty much get costs under control. Stop giving every tom, dikk and harry under the gubments wing free healthcare....meaning if your getting welfare money or in prison you don't get free reign on healthcare. Take that idea a step further...if your convicted of lets say murder or child molester you don't get free healthcare anymore. If your a crackhead no free healthcare. If your an illegal you don't get free healthcare. An illegal having a baby? You better have some cash or legal sponsor here to pay for your bills or no baby delivered here. The notion of these folks walking around poor or looking for a chance is bull. They are working under the table and making a living so they can pay just like me and you. I know it's cold but look where doing business as we have been has got us. If I was in the position to sit back and brainstorm this stuff I'm sure something better than what we have done in the past and for sure something better than obamacare would happen. Tort reform is another, allow consumers to shop nationwide for healthcare instead of blocking certain companies from doing business in certain states.

Does Obamacare address anything on helping in any area I mentioned? Or is it just another ploy to get control of another industry so they can control more tax money? I mean if it is going to GIVE SUBSIDIES to millions of people already what does that tell you? Do you really thing because it's different its better? Really? Obama is different and look what that thinking has got us!! Trillions more in debt, unheard of division in the gubment and country and we have even had our credit rating downgraded once.

I think that the better plan is Obamacare. I'd rather see it play out and see how it's going to work. I know of some people who are staunch republicans and have seen their health insurance cost drop significantly and are very happy that it happened because of Obamacare.

And the people in Mass are not complaining about Romneycare there.
