I use a double jig rig on an ultralight outfit and still have fun catching the small bass two at a time. Go light, enjoy the fight.

RE: SAUGER AT MCALPINE
there's an big island just below the hydros that has a wall going from it's upstream end to the indiana shore. there is a pile of concrete and rubble toward the indiana shore where this is. going just left of the pile is about the only place i've got through but i've been in a jon boat that doesn't need a lot of water. i do know if you hear the siren, get out of the way quick. they don't give much warning before opening the gates.

nav. charts
just found the charts on the ohio river. http://www.lrl.usace.army.mil/
the mcalpine is chart 85. it shows the wall across the water. it also shows about 6 miles downstream there is another public ramp. although that seems like a lot of driving.

RE: SAUGER AT MCALPINE
If you wanna go down stream you have to use the chute that takes you towards the lock channel ....
If you put in at New Albany this is the way you get to the hydro;they are running 8 ft of dam now at the lower ...this makes if a little tough putting the boat back on the trailer ,The lower is projected to reach 14ft by thursday ...so using the Harrsion Ave ramp will be tricky ....New Albany is your best bet
I have put in @ Harrison ave ,had them open the gates up ,then my partner had to take the trailer to New Albany to get the boat out ,thats why it is better to use New Albany when the gates are open over 10 ft
we went today but couldn't find the sauger I didn't try below the hydro ,just fished the spillway ,all we caught were white perch (drum)

RE: SAUGER AT MCALPINE
I put in at Harison and fished the turbines today. There were a couple of other boats out there but I was the only one foolish enough to use this ramp. I caught a 10 lb. striper on the fist cast, and then got nothing but little whites the rest of the day. Was tuff fighting the currents and keeping the boat where I wanted it. Not that I even know where to fish??? When you're looking for Sauger, where are you finding them? Right near the discharge or down stream? Close to the bank or out a ways and do you anchor off or just drift?
Getting the boat on the trailor was a little tricky in that stiff current. DNR saw me heading for the ramp and stopped to offer a hand. For the first time I can say THANK YOU DNR!

RE: SAUGER AT MCALPINE
we were catching them when they were running 2 ft of dam ,,we were getting by the spillway ,but not when they were running that much dam,the river is predicted to rise a foot a day til it reaches 16ft...
I am going in the morning but I will use the New Albany ramp
