Re: Are the Amish cleaning the Walleye out of Nolin?
YES they do get fined. I watched a group of about 8 of them get every piece of fishing equipment, included the little 2 man boat they had, taken away last spring for keeping a LARGE number of short fish. This was at cane run. They are out there everyday, not just weekends. One of the guys that I work pulls their boat for them ever so often. This is second hand info so take it as you will but according to him several families go in and buy the boat then take turns taking it to the lake. So at least one family is out there everyday. That's how they catch so many. You take 4 or 5 groups of families and you have a convoy out there constantly staying on the fish and telling the others how and where when they get home. Also they get there at daylight and don't leave until dark.
Q and A session:
1Q: Why don't Amish guys have 22 foot Bass boats with dual axle trailers, and 250 hp motors? A: Have you ever tried to ramp in a bass boat with a single horse drawn carriage?
2Q: Why don't the Amish Fish Cumberland? A: The ramps and access roads are too steep to pull a bass boat with a 1 horse carriage.
3Q: Why do the Amish put 12 people in a boat? A: Load testing. (see page 329, section A, paragraphs 3, 4 ,5 and 6 of the operator's manual for the Titanic)
4Q: Why can Amish catch so many more fish than I can? A: They spend more time fishing then messing with their electronics.
5Q: If the Amish can catch so many fish, what aren't there Amish fishing shows? A: Would you watch a show called "Wallye Fishing with Amos Stoltzfus"
6Q: Do the Amish pay taxes? A: Self-employed Amish do not pay Social Security tax. Those employed by non- Amish employers do pay Social Security tax. The Amish do pay real estate, state and federal income taxes, county taxes, sales tax, etc. The Amish do not collect Social Security benefits, nor would they collect unemployment or welfare funds.
7Q: Why do the Amish wear black? A: No visible nightcrawler dirt stains.
8Q: Can't I become Amish? A: No, most medical insurance will not pay benefits for "voluntary lobotomy procedures".
9Q: How many Amish will fit in a 12 foot Jon Boat? A: #1: Take the total number of fish consumed by the family per week, and divide that by the creel limit. The answer is the total number that "WILL" fit in the boat. A: #2. Take the total number of life jackets available, and multiply by the creek limit, then divide by the number of families to eat fish this week.
I have an Amish couple that receive food benifits. So yes they do get some Gov help,

Re: Are the Amish cleaning the Walleye out of Nolin?
Let me first say that I have no way of knowing if this is truthful or not.
Do the Amish pay taxes?
Self-employed Amish do not pay Social Security tax. Those employed by non- Amish employers do pay Social Security tax. The Amish do pay real estate, state and federal income taxes, county taxes, sales tax, etc.
The Amish do not collect Social Security benefits, nor would they collect unemployment or welfare funds. Self sufficiency is the Amish community's answer to government aid programs. Section 310 of the Medicare section of the Social Security act has a sub-section that permits individuals to apply for exemption from the self-employment tax if he is a member of a religious body that is conscientiously opposed to Social Security benefits but that makes reasonable provision of taking care of their own elderly or dependent members. The Amish have a long history of taking care of their own members. They do not have retirement communities or nursing homes; in most cases, each family takes care of their own, and the Amish community gives assistance as needed.

Is it true the Amish are exempt from Medicare and Medicaid withholding? What legal basis is used for this?
Medicare and Medicaid are a part of the Social Security system. Old Order Amish believe that if the church is faithful to its calling, many government programs and commercial insurance are not needed. That conviction forced them to testify before Congress because they did not want to receive Social Security benefits. What they wanted instead was the right to look after their own elderly. They were finally given approval, if self-employed, to be exempt from paying the tax. Seldom do Old Order Amish individuals accept Social Security, Medicare, or Medicaid.

Re: Are the Amish cleaning the Walleye out of Nolin?
The Amish just have no regard for wildlife laws and that is just the sad truth.
Re: Are the Amish cleaning the Walleye out of Nolin?
Was fishing Nolin on Monday afternoon and buddy caught a 17" walleye. I fish Nolin most every weekend and its the second one I have even seen caught in the lake (fyi, the first one that was caught was only like 4" so that doesn't count).
Re: Are the Amish cleaning the Walleye out of Nolin?
Let's hope they stay on Nolin. A couple of weeks ago when the fishing was really good on Green River the first thing I thought of was here come the amish. I cannot remember the last time I was at Nolin and did not see one of them fishing. Every fish regardless of size and species is in danger of being eaten. The problem is if you have that much time to spend on the lake. There are going to be days when you can load the boat and that's exactly what they are doing.
