Re: Lake cumberland waters not that bad
When I am out night fishing for stripers I will occassionaly put a balloon with a glowstick in it and a shinner below it out way behind the boat. Several times I have had something grab the shinner and take off running fast. I'll have the clicker on the reel and it will be screaming. I've let the fish run 50 to 75 feet but as soon as I put pressure on the rod, nothing. No fish and the shinner is still alive on the hook. The same thing happend during the day back in January. Any idea which fish is doing this? I thought it might have been the Walleye at night as one night I caught a couple in the same area the balloon was taking off.

Don't really know. I am thinking though that sometime fish get caught in the line/leader when they stun the bait eihther when ramming it or slapping with the tail. Just a theory probably never know. somethmesfish willhold the bait in their mouth and run off with it and for whatever reason the hook does not set.

GAR, they do this all the time to us on the river fishing for the big whiskered ones.
Re: Lake cumberland waters not that bad
Could the mystery fish be a big buffalo? My buddy caught one about 20 lbs on a jig one day. Hooked right in the mouth.
Re: Lake cumberland waters not that bad
Could it be the lock cumberland monster. Lol lol lol:d

Gar is my bet also. You can let them go for a minute or two and not hook em. I think they wonder off with the bait sideways in their mouth. Sometimes you will hook them on the outside of the mouth or get the line wrapped around their long nose.
