Re: fishing or not fishing
FFG as already stated, trolling IS fishing plain and simple AND those who say otherwise don't have a clue how to "do it correctly" or they'd KNOW it takes far more knowledge to contour troll then to simply pull up on some point and start slinging plastic.... Ignorance, envy no matter they have NO CLUE .....
IF they ever troll it's likely dragging a few lures through the water behind the boat, no logic no experience and probably not much fish caught IMO....
No doubt about it...trolling is a method of fishing, and it takes knowledge to do it correctly and to be successful at it. It also takes knowledge to know which point to pull up on, when you should be on that point, what plastic to sling if indeed that is the lure needed, how to impart the proper action to the lure, position the boat etc...takes just a little knowledge also...and yes I have a CLUE.
Re: fishing or not fishing
Look at it this way. Most bass fishermen don't "still fish" -- that is fishing with live bait and a bobber (although FNF is pretty close!). They say when they cast to "cover more water" and that is exactly why I prefer to cast. Trolling just takes that thought to another level. You can put out multiple lures and cover even more water than casting albeit mostly open water. Trolling tight to cover wouldn't work well just like casting open water generally doesn't work well. The sour grapes you have heard are just jealous of your success and the pictures you have posted. Troll on!

Re: fishing or not fishing
Dave I was certainly NOT questioning YOUR knowledge (that would be absurd) I WAS questioning those who don't have a clue how to properly troll (but just pull up on random points and sling plastic and consider "that" fishing) also never mean to imply to Properly "sling plastic on a point" takes no talent or knowledge, however I'd bet those same "fishermen" who say trolling is not fishing don't have a clue about either method or the proper implementation thereof which was in fact the point ;) (pun intended on "point")
Re: fishing or not fishing
I would call it ignorance more than anything else. Live bait trolling can be a lot more time consuming and a lot more work if its done right. Of course you can put the same amount of effort into casting and increase your odds as well but its my guess that those who question the trolling method probably hop in a boat and throw out whatever's tied on... I'd lay money that if the people who say it is an unfair way to fish ever tried it THEY would probably not do as well as they would casting.
Getting a fish to hit something with a hook in it is a challenge regardless of the presentation.
