Re: What do you carry on your boat for Protection.....
I'm a 61 year old senior citizen but I don't "carry".
However, I do have fillet knives all over the boat, a 5 foot wooden paddle, and an anchor on a chain that I'm sure I could swing around my head and throw at somebody's head that was up to no good.
Now, if they have a firearm, I'm up that creek again with only my one paddle.:(
Darn,Geo, sorry that happened to you.:(
I do have at my residence a 1911-A that I got from father who used it in WWII. Maybe I should pack that in my boat and worry later what the authorities say when I decide I "have"to use it.
Re: What do you carry on your boat for Protection.....
Glock 27 every where I go, with out exception unless I have to go into a jail lol.:D
Re: What do you carry on your boat for Protection.....
A very serious issue that I will add a little of humor to for Geo:
I have seen you cast and you have a hard time hitting THE WATER FROM THE BOAT SITTING IN THE MIDDLE OF KY LAKE AT 4 FEET OVER SUMMER POOL. You better get something totally automatic with a clip that holds about 200 hollow point bullets and some duct tape to hold down the trigger and still wait to see their whites of the eyes before you start pumping lead. Even with all this my guess only a flesh wound is all the potentially bad guys would get, which would get infected and then they would take you to court and end up getting all of your fishing stuff in a settlement anyways. Done laughing now. I don't own a gun, never have owned a gun for I don't hunt. I do carry a mean set of tools with me in my Explorer and Boat that will do some damage plus some really nice long metal flashlights to which I have put tacky tape on the grip to make sure when I swing it is still attached to my hand after crushing a skull or two. Whatever you do, RESEARCH it all up front as to not get yourself in trouble is all I ask
Re: What do you carry on your boat for Protection.....
For me, personally, if I'm outside the home...I am not concerned about using lethal force to protect possessions. I'm concerned about my life. If someone wants my car, my wallet, or my fishing rods...they have a weapon...and they are willing to use that weapon to attempt to take them from me...they're probably going to get my stuff. Even though I carry, it's highly likely that I would give up possessions rather than pull a weapon and take a life to protect "stuff." It's just not worth it for me to go Wild West on somebody and take a chance on getting shot if all he wants is stuff. I don't think that's being weak. I think that's being rational.
But, there is a fine line between whether or not you feel like your life is in danger. If someone is armed, be it with a gun, knife, or baseball bat...I have to quickly assess whether they just want my stuff, or whether they want my stuff after killing me so that I can't ID them. Think about that. Whether you're on a boat ramp at 2am, in line at the bank, or stopping at the liquor store for a 6-pack...and a threat presents itself...is your life imminently in danger? Quick decision. If you perceive that it is, you have a right to defend it with lethal force. Just because you have the right to, doesn't mean that it's always the best choice.
Years ago when I was a kid, my Dad was in line at the grocery store real late one night picking up some medicine for me. He heard a commotion over the intercom and a man in a ski-mask came running down out of the front office, where he had knocked over a clerk who couldn't get into the safe. He walked straight down to the lane Dad was in, went up to the cashier, and stuck the business end of a revolver in her back....demanded the cash. Dad took a step backwards, and the guy put the gun in his face, calmly told him that he ought to rethink moving, unless he wanted to wind up dead tonight. Did Dad perceive that his life was in danger? I'm sure. Did Dad have every right under KRS to pull a gun and shoot the attacker? Yep. Would it have been smart to do it in that situation? In my opinion, no. The attacker obviously had the upper hand and Dad had no element of surprise whatsoever. If the bullets had started flying, it would have been a different story, and you do what you can to duck, get behind something, and go for your weapon. Otherwise, you put your hands to the sky and do what the man says...let him have your wallet if he wants it. That's not weak. That's smart. Dad never carried, so I remember him telling me that all he could have done was pick up the nearest can of pork-n-beans and go upside his head...and he didn't like the odds of canned goods vs Smith & Wesson. LOL
As far as people breaking into your home and your rights to use lethal force against them, Google "The Castle Doctrine" and read. This is that "Stand Your Ground" ideology that says a person has the right to defend "Their Castle"...in short, you have the right to shoot on sight when the intruder has entered your dwelling, residence, or occupied vehicle. KRS 503.055 Don't worry if you shoot them in the side, the back, or the ass. LOL Just make sure you shoot them dead. The one that lives is the only one that gets to tell the story.
Re: What do you carry on your boat for Protection.....
Officer's question to me. "Why did you shoot the perp 8 times?"
My answer: "My weapon only holds eight shots."
Re: What do you carry on your boat for Protection.....
Hey George, what about the gun Dirty Harry used. A Magnum I think they call it. I think that is appropriate in this case and blow those scrum right off the dock and they can be fish food. I could hear you saying" Go ahead punk, MAKE MY DAY!!" :)
Re: What do you carry on your boat for Protection.....
Interesting thread. I've thought about the cwp, and opted not to. Its a matter of record, why should anyone know that I have a registered firearm? My guns are legal because I passed the FBI questionaire, I can carry it openly in Ky,warning shots back a few years agoand sometimes I do. I fired several warning shots a few yrs back at the Lillydale ramp, the guys messing with my truck took off. A few minutes later a jamestown squad car appeared. They had a report of shots fired. I told what I did, and the cop told me to get my ass out of there quick. Its scary to see an armed cop come to you, with gun drawn. So now I will carry sometimes in a visible holster in some ramps in Ky. But in the car, a can or two of wasp spray. Who knows a day may come when a knock on the door comes and they will ask for my registered weapon. Maybe I'm being paranoid, but in new orleansw when martial law was declared, they knew where to look. Since I sold my property I havn't fired my pistol in 3 months, but before that it was a weekly thing, and at 30yds I was pretty darn good.$ yrs ago when my son in law came down from nortern In, in two days we fired about 600 rds, from 25cal to 44 mags. I wonder if with the new computers in police cars if they have the info on cwps.
Re: What do you carry on your boat for Protection.....
one other thought. We have the right to own firearms. But while defending life and limb, you hit an innocent bysytander, they have the right to sue you for every dime you have or hope to get.
Re: What do you carry on your boat for Protection.....
see ,that is crap. if someone is IN my garage or house, i should be allowed to blow their head off,no questions asked. i dont really want to wait and see what they have for me or care to ask what theyre doing . they arent supposed to be there and they knew that walking in.
I agree 100% but that is what he told me. If some one breakes in my home, I dont care if they standing on there head they are going to have a very bad day but out side the home it is illeagle to use forse to protect persoal property. Like some one else said having a ccdw permit will get rid of a big gray area in this 1/2 crap written laws.
Hay GEO you might want to look into a springfield XD45 the cop that told me this stuff had one and loved it and there priced right..
Re: What do you carry on your boat for Protection.....
A few more notes. Some have already been mentioned some have not.
1. You are responsible for every bullet downrange. So get quality training at a good range. Preferably a range that specializes in 3 dimensional ranges and movement. Shooting a paper target at 21 ft is not good practice.
2. There is no "duty to retreat" in KY. You do not have to try and get away first and shoot later. KY law says that if you have the perseception that your life is in danger you are justified in commiting homicide... thats literally what it is called a justifiable homicide. However, in the event you see a third party who is being victimized, it has to be "actual" threat of death or injury. In otherwords, if you see a guy standing over a man laying on the ground bleeding and he is pointing a gun at him, dont shoot the guy with the gun. You may just kill an undercover cop who just caught the bad guy and be in a world of trouble. Therefore i learned a long time ago, my firearm is only to protect me and mine...
3. Ky has castle law. If they are in your house, car, garage, or whatever and you are already occupying said place, you are justified in defending yourself. However, if you are in the house and he is stealing your car out of your garage, let him have the car because it is no longer justifiable. If you feel you must shoot him, put a lighter and a gas can by his body... because under KY law you are justified if he is "going to burn down your barn" or garage in this case... (thats a joke, dont shoot em).
4. Shot placement and actually having the firearm on you are more important than what you own. Dont get caught up in "I have to have a Kimber .45, everything else *****." A .22 can kill with proper shot placement, and a .454 Casull can not kill if you miss the target all together. Also, remember that if a gun is too big, heavy, and hard to conceal you may not carry it at all. And havin a .380 pocket gun in your pocket is better than owning that Desert Eagle at home. So pick a gun that you can carry comfortably, practice combat effective shots, and if you are going to carry... carry all the time...

That is only half of it , If you shoot some one in self defense the wife or parent brother or who ever of the dead party can sue you for wrongful death. They most likely will not win the case but how many thousands of dollars is it going to cost you to get out of it. My cousin said it best the other day he said any body can go down to the court house and file any charge on you and you have to prove your innocence that is just not right in my book they need to re wright that law or hold up there end of it any way there end is if you state false witness you can be charged for contemp to court and if there was a just law suit you should be able to burn there @$$ for filling false witnes toward you and they should do time in jail for it as well.
Re: What do you carry on your boat for Protection.....
Some great points and info on this thread. I'm sure all of you CCDW Permit holders know this but for others that don't have one yet.... if you get stopped by law enforcement make sure you tell them you are a CCDW holder and let them know if you have a weapon with you or not and if you do tell them where it is.
I have been stopped twice since I have had mine and both officers actually said thanks. I didn't have anything on me or in the vehicle at the time.
