Re: To trailer covered or not
Thats with the tailgate up vs down! That has nothing to do with a Tonneau Cover
It's a well known fact that Tonneau Covers on pickups increase fuel mileage. Which has nothing to do with tailgates.
According a study conducted by Western New England College's Department of Mechanical Engineers, "The best way to reduce drag, and improve gas mileage for pickup trucks, is to add a tonneau cover." Their study yielded gas mileage savings of 8% by adding a tonneau cover to a Dodge Ram.
And I know for a fact that my 2010 Silverado got at least 2-3 MPG's more once I added the cover, I could see the readout being my truck gives instant MPG readouts....
YOU DIDN'T WATCH THE WHOLE THING!!! GEEZ!!!!
Watch the whole thing, and you'll see that the "mesh" tailgate performs the best!
The myth buster dudes did this test on their show one time.
Yes they did - I posted a link to the video - they did a second test with a tonneau cover, a mesh tailgate, tailgate removed, etc...pretty interesting test.
Re: To trailer covered or not
When towing with my Tahoe I always cover especially in wet conditions. Tahoe has lift kit & 35" tires so anything on the road ends up in the boat. ( parts of dead animals, worms, sticks you name it). My new truck at factory ride height I don't have this problem so I tow uncovered a lot.

Okay, the mesh tailgate works best! Cool....but they still didn't dispute anything about the Tonneau Cover, all they said was "it was about the same". They never gave any fuel consumption numbers or drag coefficients. Nothing in that clip gave any information about fuel savings with a tonneau which is exactly what my point was. The tonneau without a doubt saves fuel, there is no disputing that!!!
Re: To trailer covered or not
I had a guy make a fitted cover for my skeeter and it looks like a torpedo behind my truck. Such a good fit , I don't have to use straps on it . I noticed a nice improvement in my fuel milage vs no cover. Like 3 to 4 mpg.
No question a good fitting cover will reduce the airflow going into the boat and will instead push the air up and over the boat. You, me, and Zell Rowland agree!
Re: To trailer covered or not
I would just like to tow my boat more, can't afford to go, covered or not!
Re: To trailer covered or not
My car uses a lot less gas when it's covered.:D
