Re: How many would eat Ohio River crappie?
Kdfw post these at their site and if I'm reading this correctly, there isn't anything wrong with the river that isn't also wrong with some of the lakes.... Does anybody eat fish from green river?

After reading this, I will NOT be eating anything out of those places. I didn't see anything about Nolin, so I will continue to stock up on spotted bass from there.
Re: How many would eat Ohio River crappie?
i eat them moderatley i also eat striper saugeye and hybrids maybee 1 time a month or so its not as bad as people claim
Re: How many would eat Ohio River crappie?
Heck yeah, I'll eat them whenever I can get them.
I'm not worried about living forever.
Between the chemicals and poop coming out of the rec boater heads, the trash all over the banks, and the open drains running from the singlewides up and down that river, I don't even like to put my hand in the water if I have a cut or something. NO to eating fish, YES to catching carp and trading it for a General Tso's at a local resturant
Shoot yes, me too, imagine how old and ugly we would get if we lived forever.
Re: How many would eat Ohio River crappie?
I have a mess of fish about every couple weeks and they are either from stoner creek, lake carnico or cave run but I wouldn't have a problem with them if they were from the ohio river... Supposedly they are about as bad from one place as they are from another and I kinda like the little rascals... Something has to kill me, can't imagine being 120 as tough as it is to get these old bones moving at 66.
Re: How many would eat Ohio River crappie?
its not always about the mercury content. the majority of fish from the ohio river and its tributaries have little black and brown parasites. i always try to make sure and get the majority of them out before cooking a mess. in general though IMO eating fish from there is fine if cleaned correctly.
Re: How many would eat Ohio River crappie?
Last time I checked the Ohio Fish Advisory's the crappie
was the only one not having limits on how many you can eat.
As far as mercury, ALL LAKES have it too, it comes from the rain.
Most fish in the lakes have the same levels as the river ones.
Taylorsville lake is much more polluted than the Ohio, it's
a major problem with that lake and yet you never hear about that.
Sauger need clean water to live, most lakes can't support them and
yet they thrive in the river, Hmmmmm.
Since they are not bottom feeders, i would say, a meal every 2-3 months would be o-k. Besides, we all eat chicken, they eat poo-poo, and have sex with their own mothers!!, and i don't even want to go into what a hog will or won't eat!!! Tr
well said!!
Re: How many would eat Ohio River crappie?
Everyone has some good points. I wonder how many of us read the labels of the foods we eat? I wonder how many drink alcohol in excess or in moderation over a period of years. I wonder how many smoke or chew tobacco. Really all of these things can lead to a premature death, even eating too much fish that are contaminated with mercury.
But, other than eating totally organic in some form (Or quit eating altogether) there is no way to prevent some toxins or non-natural products from entering the body. I've seen the effects of these habits working in health care and they can cause premature death (not living to the normal life expectancy). Personally, I don't do any of the above (used to but no more) but I would probably eat a few of those crappie but only in the recomended servings that have been studied to not be harmful by the KDFW. I've even eaten some of the stripers that have the parasite :) (Sorry stripernut, I hope you don't puke!)
Later,
Tim
Re: How many would eat Ohio River crappie?
OK Aquaman I'm going to correct some of the things you said that are totally invalid. ie wrong and misleading.
You can't just look the water and tell what's in the water even if you are a scuba diver. Scuba divers are not Chemists. And only a chemist using sophicated analytical equipment can tell whats dissolved or suspended in the water.
Fish can't clean themselves of PCB's and Mercury and other heavy metals by swimming in a tank of clean water. That's not going to happen.
The visibility of the Ohio River at the bottom is ZERO. I too was on a dive team for many years and have dove in the Ohio River on recovery operations many times. You can't see your own hand in front of your face mask when on the river bottom. Beside the current is so strong that you can barely stay orientated down there.
BTW the river bottom slow the current down so the current right next to the bottom is slower than a few feet above the bottom or in the middle of the water column. Just like the current next to the bank is slowed down by the friction between the water flow and the land. Current is slowest near the bottom and thus the visibility is better. Even then the visibility at the bottom of the Ohio River is zero on most days. Perhaps if there is no rain for a month or two and the river is very low and with no flow it might clear up a bit. But then the sewage being dumped into the Ohio River is not diluted by the rain water and the concentrations of chemcials in the river is increased.

Tell me that when you are dying from Cancer in a few years. I'll be that when the cancer is eating at your body and you are in such pain that you want to kill yourself you will regret saying this.
Sure it's easy to say that right now. It's not just about living a couple more years it's living a life that's without pain and anguish.
I would rather get hit by a buss and go quick than to linger around in a hosptial for a month or more.
I use to smoke and back in those days didn't care about lung cancer or any other thing like having a heart attack. But then after I had a heart attack I wished that I had never smoked at all. I'm still alive thanks to some surgeron who gave me new heart arteries but I can't do half the things I used to do. My physical activity is very limited nowdays.
So please don't discount your health. You will live to regret it someday unless you get hit by a buss and go quickly. And we all are not so lucky.
