Re: Guntersville mid march?
I released my 12 pounder from FL, and to be honest I am disapointed with the replica mount, and if I ever get the chance to hold one that big again i'm going to keep it. those big fish from FL,TX, and CA are very common and the genetics are there to help replinish any losses. However, at Guntersville and Ky lake The genetics are there but the growing season is not so it just depends on what body of water you are on as to whether or not I could justify keeping one or letting it go...and another side to this is the fact that if you catch a 8,9 10 pounder in AL or KY the fish is probably very old and doesn't spawn as well as she used to, so removing that fish may not be a problem. Of course I'm a geologist not a biologist.
FL,TX, and CA are all F1 strain bass that also helps in them being larger.
Re: Guntersville mid march?
I'm wondering with the water to already in the low 60's will I be down there at the tail end if the spawn, weekend of the 19th?
Re: Guntersville mid march?
Cooter you are nailing the full moon!!!! Your not gonna be at the tail end you gonna be in the thick of things - remember #1 moon phase #2 water temp. Your only issue is to find hard bottoms gonna take a little searching but keep that in mind because the lake is known for it's grass we sometimes forget about the spawning habits. The first wave of spawners are moving down the creek channels now - the BFL guys were following them till they struck gold, look for the first drop from the spawning areas and load the boat because the big girls will be like horses ready for a race and will stop at that first little bit of verticality before going on in for some lovin and they will bunch up there.
Re: Guntersville mid march?
Well we had a great trip. The big fish didn't show up til the bad weather hit. We had bluebird windy days thurs-fri. Managed good numbers on xr50 in royal shad. Same thing on fri. with a few 4 pounders. Then on sat it rained all day and we caught them good. 20+ good keepers and a couple over 5. All in all a good trip hanging out with friends and getting away from the daily grind.

Assuming you caught most of your fish around grass? Did you catch them in the back of the creeks or close to main lake?
Re: Guntersville mid march?
We caught fish from front to back. The farther we went back the bigger the bass got. We ended up diggin mud with the trolling motor to catch some fish. Goodluck to all that plan on going down there! It is the best lake in my book! With the rain Sat we couldnt take many photos, here is one we managed to get under a bridge.

Re: Guntersville mid march?
Leaving Thursday. Any tips on what parts of the lake to fish? Should I look for the under water vegetation? What lures are working? Thanks in advance!
