Will be taking grandson out next week on his first saugar trip/Louisville or Lexington area. Would appreciate any reports and suggestions. Thanks to all for your replies and especially from my grandson (fisherman in training :D)
I'm thinking jugging spoons and bottom fishing minnows? (will be fishing out of me boat)
we went striper fishing yesterday 11/14 at the hydro and ran into a guy that had 2 nice sauger he got one in the duck pond he was using twister talis on jig heads tipped with minnows

We fished from 11-3 yesterday and caught 6 sauger. Only one nice one and 5 small. Caught all on curly tail grub tipped with minnows up towards upper McAlpine dam. They were not biting hard at all.. Would lift jig and felt weight. I would say another week or two before it gets good.
Caught a good 18 inch sauger today at McAlpine. The rest were under 12 though. So they are slowly moving in. Hopefully this rise in the water will bring them in when it calms back down
I think you are right ! ...I would try the deep hole off the Harrison ave boat ramp ... this time last year we killed them there , but it was clear water and low .With the river being 21ft .I would be in the duck pond
Ok guys. It's getting to be soon before they start running hard!! Any reports? I will give reports and pics on the trips I make this winter.
Hit it Fri before the front,water temp was 51.Hit a couple creek mouths and the duck pond with white and char. grubs...no luck, did hit one blue(pic on photo board) that was it.Didn't have any minnows but don't no that that would have helped with the water color. This cold front should drop the water temp to there liking. I don't usually start sauger fishing till Black Fri. Thats my starting date, wife goes shopping, I start saugering.....well I still keep the cats honest all winter to. LOL. Chuck
Stopped by the Falls this morning on my way to Thanksgiving festivities at the in-laws. The current is raging. My question is "Is it worth my time to sauger fish when they are letting the gates loose?" If so, is there anyone who knows how to fish in these conditions and is willing to share as much info as they want? Thanks for any advise. I would like to hit the falls Friday morning to see if the sauger are running yet.
If you are bank fishing try grubs with big lead heads if you're fishing from a boat try jigging spoons.
When the water I this high I try to fish the creeks mouth by the river. I usually do ok wit sauger and striper. The bait tends to school in there really well in high water conditions.
I have been fishing the falls trying t see when the sauger will move in and no luck yet. Only a few here and there. Had a few nice ones but no consistency on the bite.
I fished ky river dam #10 at Boonesborough state park on Black Friday between 6-10 AM. Caught 2 small sauger confirming that there are sauger that far up-river, and they are moving in for the winter. Caught them while fishing on bottom with minnow and floating jighead. I will continue to fish this portion of the river, and post any further info. Hope this helps.
