RE: Need info on Lake Malone
Just a word of warning - there are some Malone haters on here. Personally I like it! It has given me the best bass of the year, just a little over 7lbs this spring. I also read in a magazine where it is the state's secret bass lake and many think the next state record is swimming around in there.
I just began fishing it a couple of years ago. It's a great all around lake - some big bass, lots of medium to large size shell crackers, a good population of cats as well.
I have no idea about the fishing there this time of year, I would like to fish it, but I'm moving farther away from it and won't get a chance to fish it anytime soon.
It's a smaller lake so its easy to explore.
There are several different places to fish it - if you put in and fish around the state dock there are several deeper bluffs and rock walls to fish. During the summer you'll want to get into a no ski zone or you will get washed on the bank.
As you wrap around the lake up next to Shady Cliff (I think thats the name of that dock)there is some cover to fish.
Go under the bridge and the water gets shallow and offers a lot more cover to fish.
I've been told by anglers who fish there more than I do that it is a jig lake. I have luck with a fluke or baby brush hog on a spot remover jig head.
crickets are the way to go for shell crackers.
Oh, there is a 150hp limit on the lake. State dock is free with a good launching area, Shady Cliff is a $3 charge with a not so accomadating ramp if you are launching alone.

Lake Malone HP Limit update
The state increased the HP limit to 200 hp, but only between Labor day and Memorial day.
I wouldn't call myself a hater of the lake, but I never really liked it. I fished it for about 4 years when I first started fishing for bass, and haven't fished regularly since 1998.
The biggest fish I've seen has been uplake on the shallow end past Shady Cliff, but the keepers I've caught have all come from the other end. After you leave the state dock, the main lake will curve around to the left, but if you hang right, there are three main fingers. My best fishing has always come from an area I think called Sherwood. It is back in the right finger, and there is an old road that is used as a makeshift launch. Across from that is a great point with a ridge extending out, great for CRing. To the right of the launch there is a small feeder creek with a nice flat, that I've caught a bunch of nice fish, but less than 15 inches though.
Good luck.

RE: Lake Malone HP Limit update
Danny, yeah thats is sherwood point and youre right that area of the lake has produced best for me also.I used to fish that lake faithfuly but in the recent years i havent been able to go down there but to hunt. i have a freind who has property on the lake( 169 acrs.) to be exact. it is on frank lane past the state park entrance. my best advice is to fish the lake and try different things. we had alot of luck on jigs and soft plastics. sometimes you have to fish deep and other times they will be shallow. my best fish there was a 5.4 L/M.
Good luck and dont give up on that lake as it can be at times a good fishery.
RE: Lake Malone HP Limit update
the whole lake is good untill you get past the bridge it #### up there. ive caught one over eight every year for the past 3 years and the year befor that a 7.99. this year i had one that weighed 9.4 in feb. its a weird lake!
RE: Lake Malone HP Limit update
Thanks for the info, where might a fellow get a topo map of the lake....
Thanks basslure, but.....
I have a 225 hp and unlike others, I won't change the decals on my motor to make me appear legal. So, I'll just keep fishing bigger lakes.
In fact, I think it's extremely ironic that so many will cheat in a tournament by changing the decals on their motors, making them illegal, yet they are all over anyone else that breaks a tournament rule. Oh well, to each their own.
I guess it all boils down to one's personal morals.

RE: Thanks basslure, but.....
Ok, is the limit 150 or 200 hp, don't want to break any rules when it comes to fishing a lake that has a HP restriction. Any word on the topo map of Malone.
RE: Thanks basslure, but.....
If my memory serves me correctly, i recall a couple of guys being disqualafied from a torney years ago for doing what danny is talking about. the hp restriction causes alot people to go elsewhere but i dont have to worry about all i have is a little 14ft john with a 15hp on it perfect for small lakes like that. also i beleive i saw a fishing hot spot map for malone on the web one time, you might try that.
