Ohio River Saturday
well we fished the river yesterday from 6am to around 3pm and caught around twelve channel cats from 5-10 pounds one 13 pound flathead and a 14 pound blue. i have went to three spots where we normally catch enough shad to last the whole trip but this time they were not there. only ended up with several shad and had to use them sparringly to fish the whole day because they wouldnt touch the other bait we had. any one care to share a decent spot to catch decent number of shad?? Thanks

Re: Ohio River Saturday
No shad, but we caught some skipjacks below Mcalpine at the lower gates last week. Will use them as cut bait in the future.
This low water should be bringing shad, jacks, and whites up to the lower gates.
Now it's your turn to PM me with the spot(s) you're catching all those cats!!!!

Re: Ohio River Saturday
Sounds like you had some good luck out there, I don't think I could eat anything that comes out of the Ohio though. I lived on the Ohio for 7 years and heard some horror stories about what happens in that river. I was in the WV, KY, OH tri-state area though, I'm sure it's different in different areas.

Re: Ohio River Saturday
Since I'm not sure about selling bait without a license, I am willing to pay for fuel of anyone that can supply some fresh SkipJacks this week.

This is no joke, if you Know what I meen.

Good luck Dave, bait has been a bear to get all year. I watch poor ole Chuck(riverrat12) throw his arm off every Friady trying to get us enough bait to make one fishing trip. He said he's never seen shad so hard to come by as this year. We have thrown the sibiki rig at the Falls almost every time we go and skippies are really tough to get to most of the time.

Re: Ohio River Saturday
I wonder if the drought like conditions have anything to do with the lack of shad? In 2007 were were dry like this year but I think last year it was for an even longer period of time...was it tough this time last year to catch bait?

At times yes it was.

Re: Ohio River Saturday
I'd say the drought would enhance the spawn. It was the 12-14 inches of over normal spring rain that may be the culprit!!!
