last two seasons i followed the shad in the licking river and big bone creek, there a ton of shad in these places, I see the shad break water, or come to the surface at a rappid rate so if figured there are fish pushing them up, is this true, and if so i usually throw a crank bait 6 ft diver shad color with not much results. Is this true about the fish pushing them up or the shad doing something i do not know about, if not how do you fish the shad area.

it depends . They come to the top to feed. Did it look like they were eating. If Not they probably were being pushed up and that sounds like the right lure

Could not tell did not see anything on the surface:confused:
First things first, you have to determine if the shad are going up river or down river because that will tell you more about what they are doing.Also it makes a difference what time of year it is,and don't forget the coloring of the shad. Once you have determined these things it is much easier to tell exactly what they are doing at that peticular time!
Next time try a "little george" or blade bait and let it flutter down where you see the boils
if u see shad busting the surface they are probably being chased, throw a chrome rattletrap and rip it!

What do u mean color of shad? Like threadfin or gizzard?.....
They where silver and black, Caught one just to get a look at the color so I could match my crankbait, when you the skin seemed to come off. Just know them as shad not sure of the name, they are in the licking river and big bone creek in great numbers, in the fall and spring and part of the summer.

when you see the shad break around you and you have been throwing a crankbait around them with no luck, I always resort to the old tried and true minnow whacking. it may not yield big fish but it is a good stress reliever.
I concur, minnow whacking should probably be turned into an olympic sport, its every bit as good as curling.

I Concur i fish with jonh48 he likes to use a ugly stick light for his minnow wacking abilities sure beats curling
