I often hear people talk about "Prehistoric Fish' " such as the musky or pike or bowfin, snakehead and so on. But in reality all fish including largemouth and smallmouth are prehistoric. Ariving in the late Pleistocene, early holocene. These modern species have been around about 800,000 years. roughly 600,000 years longer than we humans have been on Earth. So next time you think about "prehistoric Fish" don't limit yourself to the standard train of thought, all fish are prehistoric.
I think what they mean is that fish such as bowfin and gar have changed very little for millions of years. btw, holocene started around 10,000 years ago, modern humans around 120,000 years, and earlier ancestors dating back some 6-8 million years.

right, but the pleistocene started at 800,000 which is where these fish became prevalent on into the holocene which is around 10,000 years ago, I'm a geologist and new estimates are that modern humans arrived about 200,000.

By your definition, virtually all species on Earth are prehistoric. OK, I'll buy that, but the term isn't as meaningless as that. When you hear "prehistoric fish," think "living-fossil fish," because that's what the term is used for, fish that have existed virtually unchanged for millions of years. Gar fossils, for instance, go back to the Cretaceous.

Technically youre correct but like previously stated...then pretty much all fish are "prehistoric fish".
The term generally applies to gar and bowfin however. Bass, musky, snakeheads, and pike are relatively the new kids on the block compared to gar and bowfin! ;)
