38 Million for a coach= ridiculous!
There are countless kids in this state that can't afford a UK college education, litterally thousands of kids. With that said they have enough money to pay Calimari this kind of money to coach a basketball GAME, ABSOLUTELY ABSURD! Yes I know the athletic department and the academic department are two totally different entities all to themselves but it's still ABSURD!
These salaries are becoming a joke, that greaser isn't worth half that kinda money, and yes I would say this if it was MY TEAM to. I'm paying for my daughter to go to nursing school and it ain't cheap, so I feel I have a right to gripe.
Now we know what's really important at the University Of Kentucky, win at all cost. There are people in that organization that would litterally sell their soul to the devil to win basketball games. Guys it is just a game the sun will come up tomorrow.
Yesterday evening Terry Meiners had a guy on his show that was saying he and and alot of his friends were going to start trying to secure Final Four tickets in Indy next year. When Terry laughed and asked why the guy said with Calimari and all his transfers coming in they would be a shoe in for the Final Four. The guy was dead serious, lol. Guys I'm not hating pay what you want do what you want, blah blah, but this kinda of thinking and money being paid for a coach is just so over the top it's laughable and almost sickening. Somewhere there may be a kid so bright he finds a cure for cancer after he gets his degree in Medicine, but he can't afford to go to school because we pay basketball coaches 38 MILLLLLLLLLION DOOOOOOOOLLLARS, that was my Austin Powers imitation, sorry Don didn't mean to borrow your avatar, lol.
Re: 38 Million for a coach= ridiculous!
I'm with you on this Mhall...I recently posted something on another thread mentioning my total lack of interest in any type of ball sports from college to pro and how I said it's a waste of time..at least a waste of my own time to keep up with and follow, etc....and I think part of the reason why I could give a crap less about it is because of the money associated with it....like you said, it's only a game and the sun will come up tomorrow...but some people live and breathe this stuff. I'd rather read a book or if nothing else sit on the porch and stare into space, lol...
So what is it that makes this guy worth 30+ million dollars over an 8 year period? That comes to about one million dollars every three months doesn't it? For that matter...what sports person, whether it be coach or player, is so high and mighty that he/she deserves a million dollar pay check? I don't understand and I don't agree.
Lastly...how can a coaches job be worth so much money? How can a professional sports figure be worth so much money? Are they doing anything to make the world a better place through their careers? Are they making the young people of America any smarter? China is kicking our butts and we're only worried about paying more money for things related to sports? Give me a break.
Re: 38 Million for a coach= ridiculous!
I agree with you mhall...but Ricky P aint no cheap date either. LOL
Anything over a million bucks a year runs together for me. Unless J.C. himself decided to come back and coach a team, there's nobody worth that much money for coaching the game of basketball...or football...or baseball...or whatever.
But it's all about the Benjamins...
Re: 38 Million for a coach= ridiculous!
Yep it seems out of hand to me. Just like when A-Rod got his huge payday and other sports figures get unprecedented amounts of money. Most of the time it's like buying that awesome new car with all the bells whistles and then realize later it's just a car and you got caught up in the moment, anyone been there?:)
It won't be long that another coach will get even more money than Coach Cal.....I can't help but think of that great poet that wrote.....I'm going back to Cali to Cali to Cali I'm going back to Cali..uh I don't think so. LOL
No sweat Mark!:D
Re: 38 Million for a coach= ridiculous!
Well, as long as it is not tax money, I don't have a problem with how much they pay him. If over the period of that contract UK makes $75 million in basketball revenue I would say it was a very smart investment.
Here is what is about to happen in the next few weeks. Rick Pitino, Roy Willams, coach K and other big name coaches who have accomplished more than Calipari, will be renegotiating their deals because UK is paying so much to Cal.
DJD did you just quote LL Cool J?

LOL! Yeah I just couldn't help myself!:p Bring back memories of dancing in da club?:)
Re: 38 Million for a coach= ridiculous!
I agree with you Mark and Split, in this economy it seems that colleges would be more careful on spending. 5 mill a year, that is absured. Sure that sports program brings in good revenue to UK, but you know if Cal was a true team player he could give up some of his salary and help pay some kid tuition with that amt of money severl kids could get the college they desire. Split if JC came and coached UK I do not belive he would ask for 5 mill a year cause he was against greed.

All joking aside...I know it's not a popular opinion on here but I say if they can afford it more power to them. Mitch and UK are big boys so Coach Cal. should not feel guilty or give anything back it's a contract (maybe unless it's like the Billy G. fiasco) and it's binding.
I personnally don't feel it's a right of every kid to go to College. You either pay or don't go, take a loan or get a grant or don't go, sure it's expensive but you do it anyway if you can.
Go in the Military and get money for College of course that takes hard work and means you have to wait a few years but that's life and millions of us did it. You either get dealt some good cards in life like brains, athletic abilities, good parents or countless other variables and deal with what you have. All people are not equal! Think so prove it to me. I'm not cold hearted but I'm sick and tired of people wanting to burden successful people with guilt.
That's the mentality of alot of people and it's catching on as status quo but it's as wrong as can be because it rewards slack, non planning, low rent, loafers and nonmotivated mental midgets alot of the time. Gimme gimme gimme:(
I am Don J. Dasher and I approve this message.:p
Re: 38 Million for a coach= ridiculous!
Don all that I am trying to say is that I am very upset that they turned me down as head coach, I was only asking 250 k a year and a couple of jerseys and maybe a UK wrapped boat, just because I do not have any coaching exp, apparentally Billy G did not have any, I think they sould have hired me. :D lol lol lol, Yes Don you are correct too many look for handouts and want everything free.
Re: 38 Million for a coach= ridiculous!
I agree Don, there is no way a person cannot make their way through college. My wife decided to go to nursing school about 12 years ago. We had two children, she had to quit her job and I ended up working two jobs. I framed house Mon- Fri. and pumped gas at a full service station on the weekends (I prefer Petroleum dispensing engineer). We are still paying back student loans and will be for years, but it was well worth it.
This is a capitalist society, make as much as the market will bear.
Re: 38 Million for a coach= ridiculous!
Alright guys let's not spin this thing into another brawl. I wasn't saying poor pitaful me give us all some of that money. But let's look at this another way.
The University of Kentucky just went through what they called a budget short fall, and impacted tuition among book costs, student housing, lunches ect.
Now, I realise that the athletic department and the academic department are two totally different things.
However how can you on one hand say you can't afford to pay the professors and professional folks at UK and all student costs are going to go up AND ASK THE STATE OF KENTUCKY for Government subsidies to help make ends meet because you are so called going broke. Then pay some greasy shady coach from Memphis 32 million freaking dollars.
Ok I'll calm down but tell me guys is there a slight conflict of interest here or am I way off bounds. Please don't give me the pull yourself up by your bootstrap speech cause there's never been anybody GIVE me squat! I earned it all and I pay out my nose for everything just like the next guy. I to beleive in Capitalism, you guys know that, that's not what this is about. I'm not an everybody gets a trophy guy in fact I HATE that kinda crap. All I was saying is there is a little bit OF HYPOCROSY here don't you think? Is UK a school of higher learning or are they a professional basketball institution.
Again, hey Steve Beshear we need some money we are going broke please help us...
Let's have a pep rally for our new 32 million dollar man....
All within a six month period, am I the only one that see's an issue with this, that's all I'm saying guys.

Mark,
I get your drift brother didn't mean to go off on a tangent....and I think you have a point. I also think you answered your own question...UK is waaaay more interested in publicity from their Basketball program than anything else. The History of old and the feeling of not being a contender has tilted the bar toward Athletics with Academics somewhere in the dark. Sure you can watch an SEC game and see an Acedemic Commercial once in a while but it's really all about the Basketball. I think it's the same with most College Athletics anymore. The excuse is bring them in with the sports and by the way we can learn ya sumthin too.....JMO
