New to the board
Hey all, new to the board here. I love fishing, hunting, camping, and the great outdoors in general...and from what I've read most everyone here does, too.
First post and I'm already gonna ask a question...where are some good places in the lexington area to camp and/or fish? We are fairly new to the area and still trying to find some places to go.
Thanks, bobby.

Re: New to the board
Welcome to the board! First thought is boonsboro(sp) state park. They have camping, swimming pool and the KY river. I know people fish it but I'm not sure what they catch. Camping sites And fishing around natural bridge as well.

Welcome to the site. Ky river like Don said would be a good place to start. Cave Run isn't to far from you either.

Red River Gorge. National Forest. Google it. They have some designated camping areas with showers (Koomer Ridge is one) and you can also camp anywhere a certain distance from the road I think. There is a crazy bear down there right now they are trying to destroy so parts may be closed.

Kendall Recreation area below Wolf Creek Dam at Lake Cumberland.
Elkcorn Creek hear Frankfort for fishing.
The Lexington water company reservoir (lake) on Richmond Road, I think.

Welcome aboard bobby. Lots of very nice and knowledgeable folks on here that always seem willing to help.
I second the red river gorge, but wait till the crazy bears leave. Also, fryman's boat dock in Paris (20 mins from lexington/winchester/mt sterling) has bank fishing, boat rentals, and creek-side camping that may be what you're looking for. If you're interested, PM me and I can give you some details.
Is the resevoir on richmond road public access?

Re: New to the board
Elkhorn in Frankfort has some good spots for smallmouth, I suggest checking out the Jim Beam factory and Switzer covered bridge. You can get to either of them in about 30 min from Lexington.

I can not help with the Lexington area but I will welcome you to the board.

Re: New to the board
Kentucky has more navigible miles of waterway than any other state besides Alaska. There are fishing and camping spots all around Lexington.
Herrington Lake is 30-45 mintues south of Lex. I am not sure about camping in the area, butt the fishing is fun.
Boonesboro State Park, as mentioned above is a great place for the family as there the available activities are not limited to fishing and camping.
Elkhorn Creek is a scenic place to fish but can be hard to access if you do not have a boat or know the land owners in the area. The water is public access but the ground under the water is usually owned by the local landowners and the minute you touch bottom with any part of your body or boat, you are technically trespassing.
Jacobson Park - owned by the local and open to the public during daylight hours year round is fun for all, no camping.
All of the above are within 1 hour of Lex and there are many more not listed, Jack's Creek, Lake Mingo, the Dix River, Stoner Creek and many more.
Check this out, it even has a map:
