Cellular Service on the lake
I've been considering changing cell phone providers when my contract comes up. I have the iphone with ATT right now and get so-so service around KY lake. Two weeks ago, I stayed on a friend's houseboat at the state ramp at Dale. The only place I could get service was at the golf course parking lot.
My question is, does anyone have Verizon that frequents either of those areas? I know Bluegrass is likely the best option but not for me, I use my phone for work too much and can't get by on their offerings in that area.
Sorry about the long winded post, if you skipped all of the junk above...
Does Verizon work on Ky Lake and Dale Hollow?
Re: Cellular Service on the lake
a few years ago my brothe, niece and I were coming up from TN and her cell wouldn't connect so we stopped at a verizon store and they turned her roaming on because they said that verizon doesn't actually have towers here and they use the sprint towers in ky. Been 2 years so it might have changed but I get better coverage here with att then I did with verizon.

ATT ***** in the Dale Hollow region!!!!!!!!!!!!
Re: Cellular Service on the lake
Verizon, Sprint and Bluegrass Cellular at Dale Hollow are very good. ATT and stinks at Dale Hollow. Verizon and Sprint work fine at KY Lake. I too have ATT with my contract for my family and purchased a pay as you go phone thru Verizon for my Dale Hollow trips. Just about everybody I know has ATT so ATT to ATT being free it is too hard for me to switch. I got a Verizon pay as you go phone with a Celina TN phone number so I don't have to pay any roaming charges. I put money on the phone and if I don't use it then I don't get charged. Once I make a call from the phone the cost is $3 for unlimited use all day long until midnight of that day. Best deal I found for my situation.
Re: Cellular Service on the lake
Verizon worked great for me on Dale Hollow, but At&t works better for me on Cumberland & Green.
Re: Cellular Service on the lake
My ATT works fine at KY lake, it wont work on my commute home everyday though!
Re: Cellular Service on the lake
My sprint phone does not have service anywhere on Dale Hollow. At Kentucky Lake now. No service at Blood River. I have friends that work for a cell tower installation company..... That company chose Verizon over all others. Figure they know what works best.
Re: Cellular Service on the lake
Thanks for the replies everyone. Probably confirmed what I was thinking, I will likely switch to Verizon when the time comes.
Re: Cellular Service on the lake
I have a prepaid Verizon phone and I pay them $30 a month to maintain the service. But like elnut said I don't pay unless I use it that day. If I make a call or get a call it cost me $1.00 to activate the phone for that day. But if the call is from another Verizon customer the call itself is free with unlimited minutes for that day.
If I pay another $30 before 30 days elapsed the unused minutes roll over for the next three months.
So basically it's costing me only $10/month to have this phone. I only use it for infrequent calls and for any emergency.
If I make a call to someone not on a Verizon then it's 10 cents a minute for the call itself.
I can send/receive text message for 25 cents a message and also send or receive photos for 25 cents each.
I could not find anything cheaper than this Verizon.
My friend at Patoka Lake was using AT&T and while we were on the lake I could get service at times when he could NOT.
I have not been to KY lake since I bought this phone so I can't help you with that.
My friend used to call me using his work phone which was also an AT&T phone. We would talk as he was driving to and from job sites. When ever he went though hills or near power lines in Western KY or Southern IN the call would be dropped on his end. He would call my home phone using his cell phone so I know it was not my AT&T land mine phone dropping the calls. It was definitely his cell phone. But if he was not moving around in the vehicle the calls worked pretty good.
Hope this helps. A lot depends on how close your phone is to one of your systems cell phone towers.

Re: Cellular Service on the lake
I have fished most of the lakes here in ky and my Verizon phone works great! The only place thats spotty is T-ville, but who wants to fish there. LOL
I actually sell phones for Verizon and if you have an I-phone I would suggest getting one of the many droids we have to choose from. Feel free to give me a call when your ready to switch or have any questions.

Re: Cellular Service on the lake
Last year we were at Irvin Cobb on Blood River on Kentucky Lake. A whole cabin full of ATT users had to walk outside up a hill and hold our legs and heads in contorted postitions to get 1 stinkin bar of signal... while my uncle with verizon sat on teh couch and talked to his wife.
But when we get into eastern KY... ATT kills verizon service hands down.
The only reason i keep ATT is my whole family and my wifes whole family are on ATT and i get free mobile to mobile...
