Keys to Largemouth Fishing
I started this thread to see what everyone thinks is the most important part of largemouth fishing. To me the most important part is actually finding the spots where the fish are. I am beginning to wonder how important things like lure color, scent, action, water color really are. Seems as though if you find the fish you can pretty well throw anything at them. What do you think?
Re: Keys to Largemouth Fishing
Finding the fish is the most important key but I have found a big school a few times and the have only wanted a certain bait. One time I was throwing a deep little N and catching them here and there and my partner was wearing them out on a D 22. Larger bait that dives a bit deeper. It was about every cast he was catching them. Other times I have found that a 7 inch worm will not work but by putting on a 10 inch powerbait worm with some scent I have caught a limit quick. Once you find the fish there is almost always a bait and color and presentstion they will like better than others in my opinion.

For me, the most important part is understanding how weather effects fish. I usually know where to find them, the question is, can i get them to bite based on what the weather or other environmental factors are present. This includes understanding teh moon phases, water level, clarity, temperature...
Re: Keys to Largemouth Fishing
The key to Largemouth Fishing or any other fishing is finding the fish. How to find the fish is find the bait? Learn about the habitat and patterns of the bait and you will learn where the fish are. Folllow the bait and stay on top of where they are at and you will stay on top of the fish. Basically, to learn about Largemouth fishing, study and learn about the bait.

There is a lot to be said about this. Mentality may be the most important thing about fishing. You have to believe you will catch em. Confidence is huge, both in yourself, and the luer you choose.

Man I would love to fish with Mike.
I dont really believe in colors and sents as much as i used to.
Im not the type of angler that goes out to a lake and can absloutly identify that fish are on this spot or that spot. I hear of and see anglers on t.v. that are fishing a 10000 acre lake and a fishing a drop shot in 20 or 30 feet of water on a spot of gravel or some type of sturcture that 6 ft by 6 ft. never done anytype of fishing like that. I personaly dont have the knowlege of reading down scan or side imaging. even know i bought a $1500 unit. I probably waisted my money it will probably be half off the time i figure out how to ues it. so since i cant find the fish on my graph to me its not improtant. but if i were a pro and fishing for a living finding fish i guess would be the most important. to me other then confindence your presentation is the most important. I am a bank beater thats all i do. I try about 10 different baits everytime i go out. what ever i catch a fish on i usually throw the rest of the day.
Thinking about it. ive seen little kids pull out ten pounders. ive had my wife out fish me (about everytime she goes with me).
maybe the key to largemouth fishing or any fishing for that matter is to just have your bait in the water as much as possiable.
who knows but if anyone finds out the key to sucess on the water please let me know.

One word.....
"Presentation"
Re: Keys to Largemouth Fishing
The key for me is to just get out there and fish hard....I had probably the best fishing year I've ever had last year. I contribute that to being on the water more than I ever had before. Just by being out on the water as much as possible, you are able to have that time to locate fish, patterns, and other important info that is hard to come by if you aren't out there very much. I hope to be on the water just as much this year...just waiting for some better conditions.
I have to say...I have 0 confidence with cold, stained water...one of the reasons I'm not hitting it very hard right now. It is very true that if you don't have confidence, then fishing is very difficult. I can handle some stain in the water, but chocolate milk is a "no-go" for me.

Re: Keys to Largemouth Fishing
Confidence is VERY important in everything you do in life. It is as much a part of fishing as is the rod, reel, line, bait you throw, place you fish and such. I am no where near one of the better fishermen on this board or any other for that matter. One thing I do know is that I am a pretty good FNF fisherman. The main reason that I think I catch as many or more than others do on this technique is that I am CONFIDENT that a 5lb Brownie is coming in on EVERY single cast. No matter if it is my number 1 spot, number 100 spot the best of conditions or worst of conditions. I know that I am going to catch them and that is that. I have been on the water from daylight to dark, not gotten a bite all day long or caught only a couple of small fish and then landed a 5 pounder just before dark. My buddy Hens says that I am the only dedicated idiotic fellas still out there still chucking the buggy whip after a full day of nothing to land a trophy just before sundown. I just know it is going to happen. If I only had this same type of confidence in all the ways that I fish but I don't. If I did they would call me KVD instead of that other fella.

Re: Keys to Largemouth Fishing
So far I agree with the other posts. I have to say if you look at it as pieces of a puzzle that you put together with time of year, season patterns, weather, lure choice, presentation and confidence you have a solid foundation to get started on.
I just see how you could pick one and be sucessful as much as you could by learning the other stuff. To me it's all important.
