How's your work holding out?

This thread is for the working folks only, no need to hear any wise cracks from the guys who've already paid their dues and are retired, lol...

What industry are you in and how's your work holding out? I'm in the construction industry and it's on again off again, definitely not booming by any means, far from it actually.

Ford's Louisville Assembly Plant is filling 1800 positions starting at $15.00 dollars per hour. There's some company in southern Indiana called "Connextions" (never heard of them before) that just announced they're hiring 750, not sure what the pay scale is, not sure what they do either although it looked like people will be sitting in front of a computer all day long. I also saw where Mercury Marine up in Wisconsin is going to be hiring 150 people within the next two months, these positions will make $10.00 an hour to start.

$10.00/$15.00 dollars an hour is better than minimum wage, and it definitely beats a blank, but who can survive on that?

Out of the three companies I listed, one job looks to be sitting at a computer, another one (Ford) will assemble things that are made somewhere else, and I'm not sure about Mercury Marine.

How's your work holding out?

One week I spin my wheels attempting to keep up, the next I milking the day looking for things to do. Its been that way since early spring, I too work in the construction field, in the utility side of things. I know the heat the past week had made me feel my age...

I work in an auto body repair shop and things are consistent for us....However we are the only, umm im tryin to think of a word here, "respectable" body shop in a couple counties and do 95% insurance work...We took a small hit when the economy first started heading down the crapper but it picked back up and hasnt seemed to slow down much...We're staying booked weeks in advance for the time being so I guess that's some job security

I'm a Commercial Carpenter now,had to close my residential company in 2006.Since then I've been layed off twice,once for nearly a year,since Feb 2010 I've stayed busy,we are finishing a big project on Xavier University in Cincinnati and prospects look bleak until this fall when we have a couple jobs that should be starting,Children's Hospital Cincy and another Xavier Job.
Our Lexington region has a big project all the way in Pikeville,Ky but they are only giving those guys $50.00 a day per diem to live on,I doubt you could find a motel that cheap let alone eat and buy gas.The company pulled some crap last winter by laying off guys with many years of seniority that were making over scale,they only let them come back to work if they took big paycuts.Dirty Pool in my opinion.
Things just aren't that great out there and I look for it to be tough for a good while yet.By that time,they will have us so far in debt that they'll be taking 90% of our paychecks to bail the Obamites out.

The best thing about working any job (besides pay and bennys) is the fact that your are getting exposure with other folks that might have a lead or might have an in somewhere else. I'm currently a fed, Army Civil Servant. Before I got this job, I has having a hard time finding anyhting else. Since being here, I've rub shoulders with a variety of contractors, vendors, service providers who have either lead me to or made outright offers.

I worked for the Census for a while with tiny $$. But that got my name around. I work a short term 6 month job with the Army as a temp, and again, rub shoulders with folks that noticed. Since then, I've had offers generated from both those jobs. I've stayed govt, mainly because I love what I'm doing, but if this goes away, it too will net some leads.

My best advise is if you can't do what you want, just do something, or try something on a whim. Cause ya just never know what it might help generate leads for.

Yea I figured you boys in uniform would be dang busy these days...thanks for all you do!

housing construction ***** right now...mostly

Commercial electrician nothing much going on. Use to being on electrical projects that exceed $1,00,000+. Those are far and few now. We're taking a hit in the construction industry. Materials are through the roof. I even found myself workung on a house this summer.

I hear ya...I work in electrical engineering for an A/E firm...during the past year we've had some nice fat projects (military and industrial), but right now we don't have a big fat golden egg on our plate, nor do we have one on the tarmac waiting for take-off. It's very much dog-eat-dog right now....and sometimes it feels like I'm wearing milk-bone underwear.
