That's a really good question, how many did we have there before the attack? I see plenty of reports that we're sending a "reaction team" of 50 more to deal with the situation, but no word on whether there were any marines present during the attack.
Even if marines were there, their rules of engagement probably limit them to just "talk firmly" to the attackers.
Step back, Marines at an embassy can't guard against some smuck 3 blocks over with an RPG, or a moron in a sedan loaded with C4. Marines at an embassey are a defensive force that can only act upon when attacked. They can not take offensive action against percieved threats as a deployed recon force would. They are there in the event a hostile force begins an attack to defend in place. That's the rules of engagement.
Blame the screwheads that initiated the attack, not the innocents who were playing by the rules.
Been there done that and deeply feel the furstration of knowing something is about to happen and knowing their ain't squat ya can do but wait till it does and then fight back. It don't have to be fair to be your duty.
Preemption is prevention, offense is prevention, defense is nothing more then documenting the attack and reacting.

Very well said.

My understanding from what I've read.......they were not there. No defensive force, no guard force. There were 2 marines who accompanied the ambassador, but I guess that was it.
Like I said, I'm wondering how this ever happened on sovereign American soil.
Now, understand, I'm not questioning the marines one bit. I'm questioning how / why this happened.
Later,
Geo
By the way, here's my plan for defending our embassy in all middle eastern countries:
1. Bring all Americans and diplomats in-country home to the USA...but to make it look like we're still there, rig up some mannequins on pulleys and cardboard cutouts of Michael Jordan behind the curtains on the windows, and play some loud music. (Kind of like the little kid did on the first "Home Alone" movie.) Maybe something like "Ahab the Arab" by Ray Stevens, turned up to 10, and set on repeat.
2. Install a Nuclear Warhead in basement of embassy. Heck, make it two.
3. Install tripwire connected to detonator just inside the walled perimeter of the embassy.
4. Last dude out runs a white flag up the pole, just below Old Glory, that reads: "Mohammad is a Doo-Doo Butt"
I'm betting there would finally be peace (and quiet) in the middle east within an hour.

Hahahaha Doo-Doo Butt?? That's like saying fart or poopy because the little kid in me just has to giggle.:)
From everything I have read and heard about Obama, the two Marines on duty probably had empty rifles. Obama would not want to offend or scare anyone/Moslems by giving our Marines loaded rifles. My view point tells me that as the President and Commander of the armed forces, the buck and the blame stops with Obama. I hope that he is proud of himself and has the guts to sign the letters to the families himself.
That was not the real embassy, the real one was estoyed or damaged during the civil war. Who is authorizing the use of drones in the middle east? mush limbaugh? Does the date of 9/11 sound familiar? This was a planned attack, a "pay back" by al-qwazy.These embassys are there protected by agreement with international law, islam dosesn' t recognize any law but sharia. Our mistake is thinking of them as all humans, many of them are, not all.
The Marine Corps Embassy Security Group,[3] formerly Marine Security Guard Battalion, and also known as Marine Security Guards or Marine Embassy Guards, are members of the Marine Corps Embassy Security Group
The primary mission of the MSG is to provide security, particularly the protection of classified information and equipment vital to the national security of the United States at American diplomatic posts. This is accomplished under the guidance and operational control of a civilian federal agent of the Diplomatic Security Service, known as the Regional Security Officer (RSO) who is the senior U.S. law enforcement representative and security attaché at U.S. diplomatic posts around the world. [4] In addition, MSGs provide security for visiting American dignitaries and frequently assist the RSO in supervising host country and/or locally employed security forces which provide additional security for the exterior of embassies. The MSGs fall under operational control of the RSO and are administratively controlled by the Marine Corps Embassy Security Group. The secondary mission of Marine Security Guards is to provide protection for U.S. citizens and U.S. Government property located within designated U.S. Diplomatic and Consular premises during exigent circumstances, which require immediate aid or action.
MSGs focus on the interior security of a diplomatic post's building(s). In only the most extreme emergency situations are they authorized duties exterior to the building(s) or to provide special protection to the senior diplomatic officer off of the diplomatic compound. MSGs carry a certain level of diplomatic immunity in the performance of their official duties.[5]

Here Geo :-)
This is by definition, preemption and prevention. This bad boy will "defend" an embassey.

And in reality, this piece of hardware supports the Islamic faith. If you are a Muslim, and you really want to see Allah, just stand in the open somewhere..........."Achmed, your free, non-stop ticket to Mecca is waiting for you at the courtesy desk in your local open field, or street, or open bedroom window. And as always, have a nice day and thanks for flying Predator Airlines"
