When I bent my trolling motor shaft I had a lot of torque when I would try to make a right turn regardless of what speed I was on. When I would make a left turn the motor would spin all the way left even if I just lightly push on the pedal. When trying to go straight I would have to apply light pressure as if I wanted to make a right turn.
When my trolling motor was stored the lower unit would not lay flat on the mount. I could be a bow in the middle where both shafts connect. I replaced the upper and lower shaft plus the bearing that connect the shafts together and my problem went away.
Your problem sounds similar to mine. I would say you have a bent shaft. I would get it fixed because the excess torque will be hard on the cables.
Make sure you do not have the positive and negative reversed and you are running the motor backward (with the prop out). I rigged one up that way one time and had the same things happen that you list.
I bought one of these Troll Perfect thingys because my trolling motor would turn after I took my foot off the pedal. It does work they have one for Minn Kota and Motor Guide. http://www.tacklewarehouse.com/Troll...page-TPMK.html
R19, I think you got it. Does exactly what you are talking about. But if it is bent I cannot tell, is this repairable?
Sounds like you're in high bypass mode. If your motor doesn't have this feature.... uh.......nevermind.
just throwing this out there but check the bottom part of the housing where bracket that holds the cables, mine was broke and did the same thing until i replaced it.

I got on the Motor Guide web site and found an authorized service dealer. There are several throughout the state so finding one within a decent drive should not be a problem. I don't know where you are located but I used Mark Miller Marine in Glasgow,KY. This was my 1st time doing business with them and things went smooth. I also called another place and got a similiar price quote so I assume their price was in line with everybody else.
I have a Motor Guide Tour 82. I had them replace the upper and lower shaft plus the bearing that connects them together. I broke the edge off my prop nut removing my prop a few years ago so I went ahead and got a new prop nut. If my memory is correct parts and labor was a little over $200. That may seem high but a new MG Tour 82 is around $1100-$1200 so spending $200 to get it fixed was a no brainer for me. My trolling motor is about 6 years old so it should have several more years of life left in it.
Pending what model you have the parts may be cheaper. The tour grade is a higher end Motor Guide so I assume the parts are higher for them. Get a price quote and then decide what is more feasible repair or replace.
I have a motor guidtateat does the same thing. My minn kota does not. The difference is the motor guide is a twin cable and the motor guide is a single cable. If both were dual cable I would not notice the difference. Single cables do well at low speed but you have to really work to steer At high speed.
