    Billy Westmorland

So.....Why is there literally no information on his show on the net. No videos, No links, no nothin.

I'm thinking most of the media must have been destroyed or something.

Anyone have any ideas..........Hell, I'm almost willing to volunteer my time to a tribute website, if someone has information that can be used.

    Specifically the Videos.........

I have always loved the guy. He was a MONSTER in the world of catching his beloved Ole Brown fish. He could catch them when nobody else could.

He is partially responsible for Bass Pro Shop as well. Many years ago in a tourney on Lake O in Florida, Johnny Morris and his partner whom was driving the boat had a major wreck. Morris was unconscous and face down in the water with PFD on but was near death. Billy and his partner found them just after the crash, Billy snatch them from the water and the rest is history.

I have been told Westmoreland caught well over a hundred Smallmouth in his life over 7lb.....Can you even imagine that....****

Actually is was on Beaver lake in Arkansas and it was after a tornado. Their boat capsized and they were nearly dead from hyperthermia. Westmoreland seen the gas can floating that they had scratched some writing into and he went looking for them saving the two men. It had been a long time since I had heard that story so I went back and refreshed myself. I had the end right at least, he did save their Bacon.....

I always liked his shows, loved the song they played at the start of every show. a few years ago, I worked with the guy, that ended up with Billy's Widow. I've been to their home, overlooking Dale hollow Lake. a beautiful view. the guy let me borrow VHS tapes of Billy's fishing shows, I'd watch them and return them and get more. he gave me some of Billy's fishing lures. one heck of a guy, and Billy was a nice guy as well, met him a few times. the friendliest guy ever.

First I have seen of this post. Back in 2004 I made my first trip to Dale Hollow the first week of December. From my 3rd cast with John Davis when I hooked my first FNF Brownie it became a special place to me. I knew then that I had to learn all I could about Dale. Which led me to becoming very good friends with The Smallmouth Guru Steve Headrick. Steve fished with Billy several days a week right up to Billy's passing in 2002. Steve knew I wanted to learn all I could and he introduced me to Bobby Westmoreland, Billy's Brother. Bobby and I spent many hours sitting at one of the tables in The One Stop while he told me story after story of Billy. Bobby invited me out for dinner with his wife and their 2 sons in 2005. I had already been trying to find old shows of Them Ol Brownfish with no luck. I had called the Lexington Channel 27, that carried the show and was told all of the archives of the shows had been destroyed. I knew this before our dinner where Bobby said his Sister may have copies. He gave me her number out in California where I called and she said that she was in the process of moving to Hawaii but she didn't think she had anything like copies of his shows. That was 8 years ago and I have never heard or seen where they are in existence. Don't get your hopes up.

I will say for all you Smallmouth - Dale Hollow - Billy Westmoreland Junkies, that during our Dinner I was given 2 things from Bobby and his Wife that will be passed down in my family forever. First, they gave me a 8 1/2 x 11 picture of Billy standing on his back deck taken a few weeks before his death. Second, they gave me an original hardback copy complete with the original cover protector and all of Them Ol Brownfish. The picture hangs proudly on my Smallmouth Wall in my house right next to my 2009 Billy Tourney Plaque.

Elnut, your post was nice, had a lot of kind words about Billy. and your visit with his family. but when you said All the video shows of Billys fishing for smallmouth were destroyed, it made me sound like I wasn't telling the truth in the post where I stated I borrowed and watched the videos from the guy. channel 27 may have destroyed the videos they had, but not all are destroyed, I watched several of them in 2010. pm me if you would really like to watch old Billy in action again, and I can make it happen for you. only a short drive away.

Back in February I had an article in Cabela's Outfitter Journal magazine on the history of Dale Hollow smallmouth. Billy was a big part of the story. I spent a Sunday afternoon at Bobby Westmorland's house interviewing him and his son. When the interview was over Bobby went to another part of the house and returned and gave me one of Billy's custom rods that he made by hand. Coolest thing ever.
