Beware of mislabled ammunition in the store

I purchased two boxes of clearly marked Remington Premier Accutip rifle cartridges (PRA223RC) from one of three different stores over the last two or three years. I actually thought I was buying the Remington Accutip in 222 caliber for a rifle that I've had for 30 years now.

But I discovered that two of the boxes of ammo that I had bough over the last 3 to 5 years was actually 223 caliber instead of 222. I can't remember buying or wanting to buy any 223 caliber ammo as I don't have a guy in the caliber.

Then my neighbor decided he wanted to sell his AR 15 as he needs some money fast. So he let me take the gun and play with it for a week or so. I went out and purchased some cheap Federal ammo to shoot and test his AR15 with. While getting ready to go out to the range I decided to check the ammo in my ammo box and that's when I found the Remington 223 Accutip ammo. Wow. I ended up taking the AR15 to the range and shooting it with a cheap Gamo 4x32 scope (air gun scope) that I had in the house. I just had to buy a picatinny rail riser (1") and some medium Burris Rings to get the scope mounted on the AR15. He didn't have a back sight on the AR15 and it came with a tall front fixed metal post type sight on the gas block at the front of the AR15. A1 style. The AR15 shot pretty good groups with the cheap scope at 100 yards once I got it bore sighted and on paper with the very first shot. Second shot was right on the bulls eye.

But later when I picked up the brass and started looking at the Remington Ammo I noticed that one box was the Accutip V shells and the other box had Remington 223 Hollow Point bullets in the cases. What the hell????

I figure that someone must have taken the Accutip Bullets out of a box and put them in a Box of Remington Hollow points. Surely this didn't happen at the factory???? Now I see why the stores lock up their ammo and make you get a store clerk before you can handle the ammo.

So if you shop at Ganger Mountain, Rural King, or Walmart make sure that when you get a box of ammo you check it to make sure that you are getting the right ammo in the box.

Heck I went online to www.remington.com and tried to look up what a box of 223 hollow points looks like and could not find them listed on the web site. I found the AcccuTip and the Accutip -V shells but no hollow points listed.

So I guess they don't make these hollow points anymore? That doesn't seem right to me. It doesn't make sense to me that they would not sell hollow points.

And the web site shells are listed by bullet type not by size of the bullet. At least that's what I found when there this morning. Maybe I'm missing something and was at the wrong place on the Remington web site. IDK but it's sure was strange.

It really bugs me that I know that I paid a premium price for Accutip-V PRA23RC and didn't get what I thought I was buying.

Unless this happened at the factory (which I really doubt) someone had to do this inside the store and not get caught doing it. I don't think that you can return ammo to the store. I know that Gander Mountain won't let you return ammo. I would think that Walmart has the same policy. I'm not sure about Rural King but they are getting strict on their ammo sales too. Now you have to go to the service desk at Rural King to buy your 22 LR ammo. If they have it.

I'm not wondering what the price difference is between the Remington Hollow Points and the Premier ACCUTIP-V ammo?

I'm thinking that I paid about $32 for the Accutips.

Dang good advice man. Something similar happened to me but with fishing line....I was buying some 6lb (maybe 4lb?) fluorocarbon and got home tossed it on the boat and figured I would get to dealing with it later. So a week later I open it up and it's 20lb fluorocarbon. I came out ahead on that deal but it isn't what I was after so it meant another trip to the store.
