I agree 100%. I have travelled a lot and when you hear that "twang" from an Appalachian raised person I can see how it can be taken as ignorant or uneducated. The same can be said for folks who talk like they are an inner city black person. The tagged term Ebonics comes to mind and it seems to be worn like a badge of honor just as some folks wear "hillbilly talk" as a badge of honor reflective of where they were raised.
A few words that I give my buddies a hard time on several words....
I say "wire", "tire", "fire" they forget there is an I in the words and say something I can't even spell! Another is Massachusetts, I pronounce the " chew" in the middle they use " two" in the place of the "ch" so it sounds like this......massatwocetts. It's all in fun but I never assume I'm talking to a dumb dumb based on their speech.
My my old boss used that Tennessee talk to his advantage and taught me a good lesson on listening to others and not judging based on "talk" because he would let people think he was some "hick" and they would be so surprised when he would bust through their bull crapp with his laser pointed comments that showed he wasn't ignorant but very wise. His meaning of his words spoke volumes they just came out with a Tennessee twist.![]()
