    Turnover and Oxygen

For all my fishing buddies out there. I had a disagreement with two of my fishing buddies about turnover and oxygen.

My buddies stated that during turnover, there is no oxygen, that is why there are no fish. I argued that the O2 DENSE water on the top moves to the bottom, through the column, oxygenating the ENTIRE column. The water is dirty and mucky but there is O2 throughout the entire water column.

I cannot find anything definitive on the web that states right or wrong. Anyone have an answer and some links corroborating the answer?

    Later,

    Geo

When the thermal stratification is interrupted the upper layer of oxygen rich water is free to move into the depths and the lower levels in the lake with it's depleted oxygen levels are free to move up into the surface again. What bad at the bottom can often be smelled when driving by a lake that just turned over. Especially if the lake is in a low lying area between hills.

But the entire water column will be mixed with oxygen soon after the lake turns over and the thermocline breaks up.
