Striper Rods

What rod do you guys like for pitchin the doll flies, red fins, thundersticks etc? I am looking at getting a shimano 300 off amazon, or two ( Thanks Santa) Would like to pair it up with a nice rod.

Remember, I am throwing a lighter bait than Justin. I use a 6.5 ft med bass rod in 12 pound test for buck tails and "lighter" lures like the thunder stick or Gizz baits. I use something like a 7' used for Carolina rig on 14 pound test for 7" red fins and Andrew's plugs.

I am probably on the lighter end of tackle but it works fine if it's quality stuff and you don't get in a hurry after a hook up. One thing I've learned about stripers. The harder you pull the harder they pull. You can get by with lighter stuff if you remember that last line.

My setup is for fishing the jumps not standard blind cast fishing. You can catch them in the jumps with smaller tackle no doubt and its fun. However my set up is to run up to a set of jumps get one hooked up, bring him to the boat and cast out to get a second one before the jumps go down. Get the 2nd one in and get ready for the next set of jumps. I am all about chasing the jumps, so the goal is to get 2 and sometimes 3 fish in before the jumps go down and with lighter tackle you can't do that. It's still a 15-20lb fish on a bass road so even though using 20lb test its still a fight you just horse them in a bit quicker than lighter line and not break off.
If you have 2 or 3 guys in the boat you can land 4-6 fish in the first set of jumps before the sun is even up.

So different setups for different uses.
