I saw my first group of sandhill cranes tonight over lake cumberland area. Has anyone else seen them flying over while fishin?
And I always hear them before I see them. Sound like doves on steroids to me. I saw several flocks while fishing the Barren Tailwater a few weeks ago. As a special bonus, there were also four bald eagles fishing along with us.
I've seen thousands of the cranes at Barren River Lake over the past 5 or 6 yrs. I don't know about this year but the past few years going back to the Narrows boat ramp the corn fields would be covered with cranes. I've also been lucky enough to see some eagles as well.
Dont know if it is the same cranes we have on Elkhorn creek, but I do know when they take flight watch out it rains crap. We call them chit roosters!!
At the head of White Oak creek on Lake Cumberland is a big nesting area for the cranes, they are there every year. They are not sandhills though just regular grey cranes whatever they are called. There are a bunch of nests and the babies squack like crazy, when they are hungry.
I was at Barren today and saw more cranes than bass!
A couple of weeks ago there was a quota hunt for Sandhills cranes I believe. This hear hunting I watched one walk down a creek bottom searching for breakfast! Turns out two otters came out and the crane chased em right off! Was a really cool sight. See them on taylorsville a lot too!
There is nothing that sounds like a flock of Sandhill Cranes.
