It is official this is the winter from hell
I told you it was coming and it's far from over. I do think by the end of next week that blocking ridge of high pressure on the west coast will start to break down. If that happens alot of the country will start to moderate and see some normal type temps, not warm but at least normal.
However models have shown this twice over the last few weeks only to see it strengthen yet again and entrench ever deeper. I pray we break this pattern, I'm OVER IT BAD!!!!
I don't think anyone could dislike winter weather, any more than I do. and with all the hardship it brings to some folks, it is something we need. these deep freezes like we're having right now, kill millions if insects, and come garden time we'll be glad for that. with that being said, next Sunday is Groundhog Day, mr. whistle pig will come out and check for his shadow, if he sees his shadow, we'll have 6 more weeks of winter weather, and if he doesn't see his shadow, we'll only have a month and a half.
I think next week Monday through Thursday will be the coldest weather these parts have seen in two decades. It will not surprise me one bit to see it not get past highs of 7 to 9 degrees during the day and lows of -5 to -10 degrees F Monday through Wednesday away from the city. In fact the Louisvile city limits won't see much better than that
If 2 inches or more of new Snow falls I will adjust those numbers LOWER....
Just think sunshine or hop a short flight to Australia where they are having record heat waves down under.
It was so hot that they had to postpone some tennis matches during the heat wave. Maria Sharipova was playing in the Australian Open when it was 110 in the shade. Other's were passing out from the heat in the Southern Hemisphere while we are freezing cold in the Northern Hemisphere.
If you take all the warmer temps in the N hemisphere and add them up and divide by N where N= the total number of temperature readings you get an average temp for the Northern Hemisphere. Do the same for the Southern Hemisphere get and average temp for the Southern Hemisphere and then average the two averages and you may find that the Average Temp of the Entire Earth is one or two deg C higher than normal. And the extremes are way above normal. Extreme Colds and extreme hot temperatures are the normal these days.. But the average is moving up from the past 100 years or so.
I wish I were 30 years younger so that I could take the Heat Buddy outside next to the lake shore and put on some ice skates and go play Ice Hockey on the ice covered lakes. I use to do that all the time when I was still in School. It was cold but if you keep moving you stay pretty warm. These days I have to pay $12 for just an hour or so of ice time at the indoor ice rink.
Or I could drill a hole in the ice and go ice fishing. If it stays cold long enough we can even drive a vehicle out onto the lake and drag an ice shanty onto the lake.
But it never stays cold enough for long enough to get 4" or thicker ice on our lakes here in Southern IN. At least not very often in my life time anyways.
It's so cold outside that when I went to go hunting and got out of the warm truck my breath froze onto my eyeglasses and I could not see for a while. Guess I'll have to put a soft eye glass cloth in the hunting vest for those occasions.
I went out the other night to hunt varmints and it was around 20 deg F outside that night. I didn't get home until after midnight and right as it started to snow. I called it a day when my feet said that they could not take it any more. ha ha. I had been up at the rifle range all day and I my feet didn't like my Rocky Boots for more than 10 hours.

I hear people say all the time, "The colder it gets the more bugs it kills". Hogwash!!!! If that was the case, there would not be many insects in Canada, and if you have been there in the summer you know that is certainly NOT the case!![]()
My daughter says she cant reach the top of the snow piles on her driveway. My son in law was at a meeting in Michigan city when that accident occurred on I-94. I've been in several white outs, and its scary stuff. They are bad during the daylight, and a nightmare at night, you cant use your head lights.I remember just crawling along with my hazard lights, and praying that no one in front of me had stopped.
I agree we use to have hard winter here when I was in school and the insects were as bad as ever and I agree if you go to Canada the insects will carry you off and this is in the perma frost area.
How about making some adjustments higher...a lot higher.I think next week Monday through Thursday will be the coldest weather these parts have seen in two decades. My back yard looks like a Coors commercial, only I've dug and dug and ain't found beer yet.
I've got an old friend who immigrated from some frozen republic in what was once the USSR. Dude can grow a Duck Dynasty beard in 3 days. Hell I know why now, without serious hair they'd freeze to death. I bet the women over there shave above the shoulders and use hedge clippers for the rest.
Last week I 'accidentally' ran over a couple of GW scientists studying the glacier that's supposed to be my driveway.
Come on man hit me with some good news, I'm tired of this freakin winter.
LMAO reading this........Alright Jim here goes with some possible good news. The ridge out west is slowly eroding causing a jet stream shift that will allow more warm air into our area. Southernly winds will accompy this shift of jet stream and we should start seeing more normal weather over the next two weeks. Will it last until Spring, I'm not so sure and think we may have one more outbreak of very cold weather but should be short lived. Days are getting longer and the Sun is changing it's angle almost daily now. The caviat or fly in the ointment on this will be more rain and ice events as we won't warm dramatically at first as cold retreats very slowly. How about making some adjustments higher...a lot higher.

How is that maybe a little better.
Southerly winds...longer days...now that sounds a little better. Looking forward to it, but right now it's a bit airish here in the Green. 10 degrees on my back porch this am.LMAO reading this........Alright Jim here goes with some possible good news.
