I use clips a lot in the summer only on cranks. I've caught many a nice smallmouth on the Ohio river and never had a problem with them. I like to beat the rocky bottom as well. I like it a lot in late spring and muddier conditions because it gives the baits a wider wobble. I do not use a clip in early spring and spring so the wobble will stay tighter on my cranks.
